States received from the French Nation, in their struggle for independence, present themselves warm tho the recollection. On this basis was the friendship between the two nations founded, on this basis, and the continued interchanges of regard since has it grown: and supported by these motives, it will remain firm and constant.

The Senate therefore tender to the committee of public safety their zelahous wishes for the French Republick; they learn with sensibility every success wich promotes the happiness of the French Nation; and the full establishment of their peace and liberty will be ever esteemed by the Senate as a happiness to the United-Sates and to humanity.

The undersigned secretary of state for the United-States of America, has the honour of representing to the committee of public safety for the French Republick, that on the 25th

sa sensibilité de la manière amicale et affectionnée avec laquelle le comité s'est adressé au congrès des États-Unis, en y ajoutant l'assurance positive que les représentans du peuple des États-Unis s'intéressent vivement au bonheur et à la prospérité de la République française.

Le président des États-Unis a confié cette tâche honorable et intéressante au département d'état. Elle ne peut être remplie plus convenablement qu'en saisissant cette oocasion pour déclarer formellement à l'alliée des États-Unis, que la cause de la liberté, pour la défense de laquelle les 'Américains ont prodigué tant de sang et de trésors, est chérie par notre République avec un enthousiasme toujours croissant; que par-tout où sera déployé l'étendard de la liberté, l'affection des EtatsUnis se ralliera toujours, et que les succès de ceux qui s'élèvent pour la venger, seront célébrés par les États-Unis, et y seront sentis comme leurs

The president of the United-States has consigned this honourable and grateful function to the department of state. In no manner can it be more properly discharged, than by seizing the occasion of declaring to the ally of the United-States that the cause of liberty, in the defense of wich so much American blood and treasures have been lavished, is cherished by our Republick with increasing enthusiasm that under the standard of Liberty, wheresoever it shall be displayed, the affection of the

United States will always rally; and that the successes of those who stand forth as her avengers, will be gloried in by the United States, and will be felt as the successes of themselves and the other friends of humanity.

Yes, Representatives of our ally, your communication has been addressed to those who share in your fortunes, and who take a deep interest in the happiness and prosperity of the French Republick.
