N. B.

N. B. The admirable Forms of Prayer and Praise, directed to the Father, both in the Jewish and Gentile Liturgies of the feventh and eighth Books of the Apoftolical Conftitutions, are fo numerous, full, clear and emphatical in this Point, that inftead of tranfcribing any in particular, Í muft carneftly beg the Chriftian Reader to perufe thofe wonderful Forms of Devotion ; and to remember that they are not the Doctrine or Practice of any one private Perfon only, but the publick Liturgies of the Jewish and Gentile Chriftian Churches in the very firft Ages of the Gofpel; as I have prov'd in my Effay on thofe Conftitutions; nay feem to have been drawn up according to the Direction and Appointment of Chrift; and, at the lowest, to be of Apoftolical Compofition. And certainly, if intrinsick Arguments for the Divine Inspiration of any Book can be depended on, thefe Liturgies must not be esteem'd of bare Humane Compofure. Learned Men have, to be fure, a great deal to anfwer for, when, under very ill-grounded No tions of Forgery or Interpolation, they have, in effect, lock'd up fuch ineftimable Treasures from the Chriftian Church: In Comparison of which, I look upon all our modern Books of Piety and Devotion as inconfiderable. All this will probably be thought very ftrange and extravagant; but before I be condemn'd, I muft befeech the devout Reader, who is able, to judge for himfelf; and to peruse those Liturgies a few times over with an Impartial and a Chriftian Spirit; and then I fhall not be afraid of his Cenfores on this Occafion.
