01 John ii. 1. My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye fin not. And if any man fin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Chrift the righteous. v. 2. ▼OD gave to Adam a law as a covenant of works, by which he bound him and all his pofterity to personal, entire, exact and perpetual obedience, promised life upon the fulfilling, and threatned death upon the breach of it; and endued him with power and ability to keep it a.

The Confeffion of Faith. Chap. XIX II. This law, after his fall, continued to be a perfect rule of righteousiness; and, as fuch, was delivered by God upon mount Sinai in ten commandments, and written in two tables b. the four first commandments containing our duty towards God, and the other fix our duty to man c.

III. Befide this law, commonly called Moral, God was pleafed to give to the people of Ifrael, as a church under age, ceremonial laws, containing several typical ordinances, partly of worship, prefiguring Christ, his graces, actions, sufferings and

obedience many were made sinners: so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous, Gal. iii. 10. For as many as are of the works of the law, are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things, which are written in the book of the law, to do them. v. 12. And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doth them, shall live in them. Eccl. vii. 29. Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright: but they have fought out many in ventions Job xxviii. 28. And unto man he said, Behold the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil, is understanding.

by the law of liberty. Rom. xiii. 8. Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another, hath fulfilled the law. v. 9. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet, and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. IV. To them alfo, as a body politic, he gave fundry judicial laws, which expired together with the state of that people, not obliging any other now, further than the general equity thereof may requirė g.

For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices, which they of fered year by year continually, make the comers thereunto perfect.
