"The Lord looketh on the heart."

'T is one of the mysteries which we accept as God's will that His work is so strangely made to depend upon human gifts. The human gift, prompted by the Divine Will, and that Will itself moved by the power of the petition which His Holy Spirit breathes into our hearts, hearts which He has made to feel for the wants of others, by the constraining power of the love of Christ.

[graphic]

Wondrous link in the economy of an Almighty infinitude of love and power; stooping to listen to each faltering petition of the weakest of His children; touching to bless, because precious in His sight, each tiny effort made in the strength of His promise, for His Name's sake.

It is under a deep sense of what God has already done that we send forth our eighteenth Annual Report.

A kindly thought for a friendless girl taken to God in faith and prayer, has been the seed from which the present work has sprung. To-day, scanning the brief summary of its growth and activity by those who will listen to God's chime upon the heart, it will be heard ringing out in the varied tones of want asking for help-help within the reach of each to give, for God never lays a burden upon the soul which He does not intend to move it to action.

Apart from the sentiment which such a thought imparts, it is difficult to make a skeleton of facts and figures thrill with life and power, and inspire the generous impulse.
