الصفحة 217 - When the skilful operator had obtained an equilibrium, he could row upward, or downward, or continue at any particular depth, with an oar, placed near the top of the vessel, formed upon the principle of the screw, the axis of the oar entering the vessel; by turning the oar one way he raised the vessel, by turning it the other way he depressed it.
الصفحة 9 - superficial reasoning men who judge of the great operations of the mineral kingdom from having kindled a fire and looked into the bottom of a little crucible.
الصفحة 220 - In the year 1777 I made an attempt from a whale-boat against the Cerberus frigate, then lying at anchor between Connecticut River and New London, by drawing a machine against her side by means of a line. The machine was loaded with powder, to be exploded by a gunlock, which was to be unpinioned by an apparatus to be turned by being brought alongside of the frigate.
الصفحة 217 - ... a passage into the glass tube, served as a water-gauge or barometer. There was a piece of cork with phosphorus on it, put into the water-gauge.
الصفحة 217 - An oar, formed upon the principle of the screw, was fixed in the fore part of the vessel ; its axis entered the vessel, and being turned one way, rowed the vessel forward, but being turned the other way rowed it backward ; it was made to be turned by the hand or foot.
الصفحة 183 - We had been led by our reasoning on the first appearance of hydrogen to expect a decomposition of the water; but it was with no little surprise that we found the hydrogen extricated at the contact with one wire, while the oxygen fixed itself in combination with the other wire at the distance of almost two inches. This new fact still remains to be explained and seems to point at some general law of the agency of electricity in chemical operations.
الصفحة 218 - Behind the sub-marine vessel, was a place, above the rudder, for carrying a large powder magazine, this was made of two pieces of oak timber, large enough when hollowed out to contain one hundred and fifty pounds of powder, with the apparatus used in firing it, and was secured in its place by a screw, turned by the operator.
الصفحة 217 - ... a firm piece of wood was framed, parallel to the conjugate diameter, to prevent the sides from yielding to the great pressure of the incumbent water, in a deep immersion.
الصفحة 26 - ... them, than to fubftitute in their place a more rational theory. That of Reaumur, mentioned in the memoirs of the French Academy for 1712, is the moft probable, viz.
الصفحة 201 - ... specific gravity of the acid, or th"e alcohol. The rectified spirit of wine, and the nitrous acid of commerce, never failed with me, to produce a fulminating mercury. It is indeed true, that the powder prepared without attention is produced in different quantities, varieties in colour, and probably in strength. From analogy, I am disposed to think the whitest is the strongest ; for it is well known that the black precipitates of mercury approach nearest to the metallic state.
