Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death and he was numbered with the transgressors, and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.-Isaiah liii. 4-12.

:

And the Angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise and go toward the south, unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.

And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, was returning; and, sitting in his chariot, read Esaias the Prophet. Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.

And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the Prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before the shearers, so he opened not his mouth: in his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.

And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee,

of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man ?

Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.-Acts viii. 26-35. For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth; who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness by whose stripes ye were healed.

For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.— 1 Pet. ii. 21-25.

GALL GIVEN TO CHRIST FOR DRINK.

They gave me also gall for my drink; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.-Psalm lxix. 21.

They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall; and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.

And straightway one of them ran, and took a sponge and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.-Matt. xxvii. 34-48.

THE SUFFERINGS OF CHRIST.

My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken

me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?

O my God, I cry in the day-time, but thou hearest not; and in the night season,

not silent.

and am

But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.

Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted and thou didst deliver them.

They cried unto thee, and were delivered; they trusted in thee, and were not confounded. But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.

All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,

He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him; let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.

For dogs have compassed me; the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.

They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.—Ps. xxii. 1—8; 16, 18.

And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

And sitting down, they watched him there; and set

up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Then were there two thieves crucified with him; one on the right hand, and another on the left.

And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, and saying, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be Son of God, come down from the cross.

Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes, and elders, said,

He saved others, himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.

He trusted in God: let him deliver him now, if he will have him for he said, I am the son of God.

The thieves also which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.

Now from the sixth hour there was darkness all over the land unto the ninth hour.

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabacthani? that is to say, My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?-Matthew xxvii. 35-46.

THE FELLOWSHIP OF CHRIST WITH THE FATHER.
SHEPHERD SMITTEN, AND FLOCK SCATTERED.

THE

Awake, O sword, against my Shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the Shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered; and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.-Zech. xiii. 7.

That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.-John xvii. 21.

Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.

But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him and fled.-Matt. xxvi. 31, 56.

CHRIST CONSPIRED AGAINST BY THE RULERS.

Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?

The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed.-Ps. ii. 1, 2.

Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?

The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Christ.

For of a truth, against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together, for to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.-Acts iv. 25-28.
