In witness of his Lord,
In humble following of his Saviour dear.
This is the man to wield the unearthly sword,
But who can e'er suffice-
But thou hast made it sure
By thy dear promise to thy Church and Bride,
A GOOD PRIEST.
GIVE me the priest these graces shall possess;
A prophet's inspiration from above;
A teacher's knowledge, and a Saviour's love.
SAINT PHILIP AND SAINT JAMES'S* DAY.
COLLECT. O Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life; grant us perfectly to know thy Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, that following the steps of thy holy Apostles Saint Philip and Saint James, we may steadfastly walk in the way that leadeth to eternal life, through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
HOLY Jesus, Saviour blest
As, by passion strong possest,
Holy Jesus, when the night
Holy Jesus, when our power
*James the Less.
All unequal to the strife;
Who would reach his heavenly home;
SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST'S DAY.
COLLECT. Almighty God, by whose providence thy servant John Baptist was wonderfully born, and sent to prepare the way of thy Son, our Saviour, by preaching repentance; make us so to follow his doctrine and holy life, that we may truly repent according to his preaching; and, after his example, constantly speak the truth, boldly rebuke vice, and patiently suffer for the truth's sake; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
HARK through the lonely waste,
"Prepare the way," a warning voice resounds!
The hollow valley fill,
Make straight the crooked, smooth the rugged grounds;
Thine, Baptist, was the cry,
Heard in clear accents by the prophet's ear;
Herald some Eastern monarch's proud career;
But other task hadst thou
Than lofty hills to bow,
Make straight the crooked, the rough places plain.
Thine was the harder part
To smooth the human heart,
The wilderness where sin had fixed his reign;
To make deceit his mazy wiles forego,
Bring down high-vaulting pride, and lay ambition low.
Such, Baptist, was thy care,
Might check the progress of the King of kings;
Of heavenly graces which his presence brings;
