In a work of this description, it might perhaps be expected that a list of books, forming a desirable course of historical study, should be specified; but this, I am for many reasons, induced to omit. No theoretical plan can supersede the necessity of a discriminating judgment on the part of those who superintend the studies of young people. Unhappily, the best sources of historical information are not always the safest or purest, with respect to the highest objects of mental cultivation. “To the pure". indeed, "all things are pure;" but though to such" all things are lawful" all may not be "expedient." In all cases it will be well to lay such a foundation of religious instruction as may constitute a rallying point, to which every subject of discussion may with safety be traced back; and above all, to keep steadily in view the active operations of a superintending Providence, by which the good and evil actions of men work together for the accomplishment of God's designs, proving both his distributive and retributive interference in all the affairs of this world. With such a view of the subject the present Work was compiled, and to those Mothers and Teachers who entertain similar sentiments, I trust it will prove serviceable.
