PART I.

Truth: For the Understanding.

DESIGNED to teach the great principles of the scriptures: arranged under fifty-two appropriate heads: under each head seven verses in full, and seven others referred to in book, chapter, and verse-with one piece of sacred music, and one stanza or more on every page. It is believed that every page, not only in the first part, but also in the second and third, is complete in itself, and entirely different from any other. The compiler is not aware that any one text of scripture has been repeated, and yet it is probable, notwithstanding every possible care, that there may be mistakes. These are common to man, and the indulgence of mankind he hopes to share. One thing more: the whole system has been compared with the revised edition of the Bible published by the American Bible Society, with a view to have it correct in words, orthography, capitals, pointing, and everything. No pains have been spared, and yet it may not be immaculate.

MISCELLANY, NO. II.

Dr. Watts' Divine Song of Praise to God for a Child.

TUNE-NEW BEDFORD.

How great his power is none can tell,
Nor think how large his grace :
Nor men below, nor saints that dwell
On high before his face.

Nor angels that stand round the Lord,
Can search his secret will;

But they perform his heavenly word,
And sing his praises still.

Then let me join this holy train,
And my first offerings bring;
The Eternal God will not disdain
To hear an infant sing.

My heart resolves, my tongue obeys,
And angels shall rejoice,

To hear their mighty Maker's praise
Sound from a feeble voice.

WATTS.

How glorious is our heavenly King,
Who reigns above the sky:

How shall a child presume to sing
His dreadful majesty?

The Scriptures.

LESSON III.

MONDAY. 2 Tim. iii. 16.-All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: TUESDAY.-2 Pet. i. 19.-We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts:

WEDNESDAY.-2 Pet. i. 21.-For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

THURSDAY.-1 Thess. ii. 13.-For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but, as it is in truth the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

FRIDAY.-John v. 39.-Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of

me.

SATURDAY.---Rev. xxii. 18.-For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:

SABBATH.-Rev. xxii. 19.-And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
