HOW TO USE THIS BOOK.

ONE verse every day is to be committed to memory, beginning on Monday, and continuing through the week, and the following Sabbath. This will use up the verses, in the lesson, which are printed in full. This is for an individual, or a family, or a school. In the evening before, the verse for the next day may be used for "a pillow text," as the excellent John Newton used to say. In the morning, the same text may be among the first thoughts. At the table, and in the schoolroom, the same text may be said by some one, and repeated by every member of the family, and of the school. In this manner, the first part will be completed in one year, of 364 days, as there are 52 lessons, and seven verses in a lesson. The second and third parts contain each the same number of lessons and verses, and may be completed in one year each. When all shall have been finished, the second series, in which only the book, chapter, and verse are printed, may be gone through with in the same way, occupying three years more.

But this is not all. The index, by which any verse in any lesson may be found, will help in hearing sermons. Remember the text. Find it by the index, when at home, and then compare it with the other texts in the lesson. Thus a store of sacred truth may be laid up, especially by the young. It will be very useful to read also with attention and care the chapter which contains each text, or at least the paragraph which is closely connected with it. In this way the text will be much better understood than it can be by itself alone. This has been a delightful practice to the compiler, during the time in which he has been engaged in preparing this

work; and it is recommended very earnestly to all who use this system.

In using the music each will consult his own taste and convenience. It is not expected that the same tunes will be sung by all. A metrical index is given by which various tunes may be found adapted to the same metre. Nor is it intended that the singing should be confined to a single which the first line may be found, of which the stanza connected with any lesson is a part. Reference is made also to the Psalms

and Hymns. It is hoped that singing in the family, and in the school, may be aided and encouraged by the helps afforded in this system.

None should think of making this book a substitute for the Bible. It contains only selections from the Bible. The whole Bible should be read through by course, not once only, but once and again. should particular books and portions be read.

So

In conclusion, it is suggested that this book be taken as a travelling companion on journeys, when little time is afforded for reading. Above all things, let the use of it be attended with prayer. And as a specimen of the prayer to be offered, take Ps. cxix. 18.

"OPEN THOU MINE EYES, THAT I MAY BEHOLD WONDROUS THINGS OUT OF THY LAW."

SUGGESTIONS.

1. That the duties of the various relations be carefully observed. Particularly as presented in Part II., under the Fifth Commandment. Pages 76-85, inclusive.

2. That parents use the word of God much in regulating their children and domestics. Helps will be found in Lessons XXVI. XXVII., pages 78, 79. Part II.

3. That teachers do the same in regard to their pupils. The same lessons with little variation apply to them. Let the verses be repeated as occasion may require.

4. That the word be used carefully in the correction of anything contrary to God's commands; and to encourage every laudable action.
