IN putting forth an American edition of Bishop Andrewe's Devotions, the following suggestions as to their two-fold character, as Forms of Prayer, and as Testimony to The Faith, are humbly submitted:

First. The forms of Devotion in this work not being full drawn out, but given as heads of thoughts, and as it were, a Brief of Prayers, are singularly suggestive in their nature, and thereby, best adapted for general use and to meet variety of cases; thus considered, they may be employed as guides either in Prayer, Self-Examination, or Meditation; and their language being principally drawn from Scripture, is common, and acceptable to all, and at the same time, deep, rich, and universal, and suitable to all degrees of spiritual attainment.

We would also call attention to the distinct separation of the various Acts of Devotion, as Preparation, Con

fession, Profession of Faith, Intercession, Commendation and Commemoration of the Living and Departed, Prayer for grace, and Praise, as of value, not only in securing variety, point and fulness, for our individual petitions, but also, in raising our minds to a due estimation of the magnitude of this duty, in those who count themselves members of the Communion of Saints..

The choicest excellence however, of this Work, lies in the largeness of Mind and the boundless Charity which it evinces, and which it is calculated to produce in those who use it: a spirit of universality and multifariousness pervades its petitions, so that we may reverently say here is "God's plenty" and God's truth; and, moreover, it should be particularly noted that this overflowing Charity in the heart, has for its foundation The Faith in the mind of the Writer, so that if we would attain to the same Gift, we must lay the same claim, and if we would unlock the same fountain, we must use the same key. Second. The Work evinces a deep and earnest belief in The Faith.

The Unity of the Godhead. The Consubstantiality and Coequality in all Divine Attributes of the Three Persons in the Blessed Trinity.

The subordination among the Three by necessity of being; whereby the Father by necessary existence is of none. The Son by the same is of the Father. The Holy Ghost by the same is of the Father and the Son.

The official subordination among the Three in the Creation and Redemption of Man by mutual agreement and voluntary condescension; whereby the Father by Office is the Maker and Ruler of the World. The Son by the same is the Minister of the Father and the Mediator between God and Man. The Holy Ghost by the same is the Minister of the Father and the Son and the Sanctifier of the Elect People of God.

The Son was made Flesh through a conception by the Holy Ghost, in the womb of the Blessed Virgin, and raised Human Nature, in His Person, to a conformity with the Divine; collecting within It by birth and inheritance all the treasures of the Divine Wisdom and Grace and all Power in Heaven and Earth, and putting the Seal of Divinity upon It by giving It to have Life in Itself so as to be a Source of Life to others: and by His Sacrifice eternally pleaded, in an unremitted Intercession, obtains for his fellow-men the privilege of participating in Him of this renewed Flesh and its rich Inheritance.

The visible Church Catholic to which He has sent the Holy Ghost is His Body through which He communicates Himself to us on Earth, uniting us to Himself in the Sacraments, and causing us mysteriously to partake of His Humanity, which is also a quickening Spirit, and through It and in Him to participate in that rich Inheritance which He who is both God and Man has purchased for us.

As touching the venerated author, it may be added, that not only in this Faith would it appear that this work was compiled, but to the maintainance of It also, and of that enlarged charity which it exhibits, was it devoted; for the single manuscript of it which was left was found worn away by his fingers and blotted with his tears; so that in it he has left us not only a rich collection of Christian devotions, but also a touching example how to use them.
