On the MORAL STATISTICS of GREAT BRITAIN.

By WORONZOW GREIG, Barrister, M.A., F.R.S.

This Work embraces a view of the various Crimes (including suicide) committed in this country during the present century, arranged according to the frequency of their occurrence of the proportion which they bear to the whole population-of their distribution throughout the country generally, and as between agricultural and manufacturing districts in particular-of their nature and frequency with reference to the age and sex of the offender, and also with respect to the season of the year at which they are committed-of the motives which lead to their commission-and lastly, of the effect of pauperism and education upon their increase and diminution.

To this may be added, a statement of the proportion which Illegitimate Children bear to the population generally, and to other births in particular; their sex, the mortality which exists among them, and the districts in which this offence is most prevalent; and in conclusion, a short review is taken of the different degrees of Education received by the lower classes in different parts of the country, and the effects it produces upon their morals and happiness.

Mrs. MARKHAM'S HISTORY of ENGLAND, For the Use of Young Persons. With Conversations at the End of each Chapter, and numerous Wood Engravings, illustrative of the progressive changes of Manners, Customs, Dress, &c. Containing an entirely new Chapter on the REIGN of GEORGE IV. The FIFTH EDITION, in 2 vols. 12mo., only 12s.

With the desire to increase the circulation of a work which has already attained such extensive popularity, the publisher has determined to reduce the price of this, The Fifth Edition, from 16s. to 12s., even though it is augmented by the addition of an entirely new chapter.

Lately published, by the same Author,

FRANCE, a New Edition, 2 vols. 16s.

SPAIN, on the Plan of Mrs. MARKHAM'S HISTORIES of FRANCE and ENGLAND. By Mrs. CALLCOTT. 2 vols. 16s.

"These works are constructed on a plan which is novel, and, we think, well chosen. They are divided into chapters, and at the end of each chapter is subjoined a conversation suggested by the matter of the preceding text. By this arrangement a consecutive narrative is kept up, while, at the same time, everything interesting connected with each reign is made the subject of discussion and examination: thus much valuable and curious information is imparted, without disturbing the continuity, or perplexing the progressive steps of the history.-We are glad to find that these excellent little Histories are deservedly popular; they cannot be too strongly recommended, as adapted for the perusal of youth, while readers of more advanced age may find in their pages much that is novel and entertaining."―Journal of Education.

ON THE

CONNEXION of the PHYSICAL SCIENCES. A
New Edition, most carefully revised, particularly with the view of sim-
plifying the work, and rendering it intelligible to unscientific readers.
By MARY SOMERVILLE.
Fcp. 8vo. 7s. 6d.

"The general reader, before he enters upon Sir John Herschell's Treatise on Astronomy, should prepare his thoughts for the tone of elevation which it requires, by reading Mrs. Somerville's delightful volume on the Connexion of the Physical Sciences.' The style of this astonishing production is so clear and unaffected, and conveys, with so much simplicity, so great a mass of profound knowledge, that it should be placed in the hands of every youth the moment he has mastered the general rudiments of education."-Quarterly Review.
