But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.' Luke xii. 4, 5. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.' Ps. cxi. 10. 'By the fear of the Lord men depart from evil.' Prov. xvi. 6. Happy is the man that feareth alway: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.' Prov. xxviii. 14. He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers? Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free. Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.' SECT. V.

Chap. II. 18-25.

18 SERVANTS, be subject to your masters with all fear;

not only to the good and gentle, but also to the fro19 ward. For this is thankworthy, if a man for con

science toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. 20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is ac21 ceptable with God. For even hereunto were ye called because Christ also suffered for us, leaving 22 us an example, that ye should follow his steps: who

did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth : 23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when

he suffered, he threatened not; but committed him24 self to him that judgeth righteously: who his own

self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteous25 ness by whose stripes ye were healed. For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward. Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; not with eyeservice, as men

pleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; with good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.' Eph. vi. 5—8. Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; not purloining, but showing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.' Titus ii. 9—10. Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit.' 1 Tim. vi. 1, 2.--For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for their's is the kingdom of heaven.' Matt. v. 10. Our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world.' 2 Cor. i. 12. They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.' Ps. cxxvi. 5, 6.- -For what glory is it, if, when be ye buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: but I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.' Matt. v. 38-41. 'Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink for

in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.' Rom. xii. 19-21. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.' Ps. xxxiv. 19.--For even hereunto were ye called. 'Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.' Matt. xvi. 24. That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.' 1 Thess. iii. 3. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.' ch. v. 10. It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.' Ps. cxix. 71. Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the Lord thy God chasteneth thee. Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.' Deut. viii. 5, 6.- because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example that ye should follow his steps. Let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.' Heb. xii. 1-3. Let this mind be in which was also in Christ Jesus.' Phil. ii. 5. He that saith you, he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.' 1 John ii. 6.-Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth. He had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.' Isa. liii. 9. 'Jesus said unto the Jews, Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?' John viii. 46. 'And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answer. ing rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath

done nothing amiss.' Luke xxiii. 39–41.

For he hath

made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.' 2 Cor. v. 21. 'We have not an High Priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.' Heb. iv. 15.who, when he was reviled, reviled not again, when he suffered, he threatened not. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.' Isa. liii. 7. Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil? Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me. And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth. Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.' John viii. 48–51. And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, and saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.' Matt. xxvii. 39-44.-but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously. These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee. I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.-O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me. And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the
