Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth, through the Spirit, unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently. 1 Pe. i. 22.

For they shall see God.] And when Jacob saw them (the angels of God, who met him on his way), he said, This is God's host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim. Ge. xxxii. 2. Though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God; whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another, though my reins be consumed within me. Job xix. 26, 27. Now we see through a glass darkly, but then face to face: now I know in part, but then shall I know even as I also am known. 1 Co. xiii. 12. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. He. xii. 14. Beloved, now are we the sons of God; and it doth not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he shall appear we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is: and every man that hath this hope in him (Christ) purifieth himself, even as he is pure. 1 John iii. 2, 3. 9 Are the peacemakers.] David went out to meet them, and answered and said unto "them" ("the companies that came to David at Ziklag"), If ye be come peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be knit unto you; but if ye be come to betray me to mine enemies, seeing there is no wrong in mine hands, the God of our fathers look thereon, and rebuke it. Then the spirit came upon Amasai, who was chief of the captains, and he said, Thine are we, David, and on thy side, thou son of Jesse: peace, peace be unto thee, and peace be to thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee. 1 Chr. xii. 17, 18. What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good. Seek peace and pursue it. Ps. xxxiv. 12. 14. My soul hath long dwelt with him that hateth peace. I am for peace; for when I speak they are for war. Ps. cxx. 6, 7. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem; they shall prosper that love thee. Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces. For my brethren and companions' sake, I will now say, Peace be within thee. Ps. cxxii. 6, 7, 8. The next day he (Moses) shewed himself unto them (the two Israelites) as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another? Ac. vii. 26. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Ro. xii. 18. Him that is weak in the faith receive, but not to doubtful disputations.

us.

None of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. The kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteousness and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another. Ro. xiv. 1. 7. 17. 19. I speak to your shame: brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers. 1 Co. vi. 5, 6. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by We pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. 2 Co. v. 20. Be perfect; be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you. 2 Co. xiii. 11. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance. Ga. v. 22, 23. I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called; with all lowliness and meekness, with long-suffering, forbearing one another in love, endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Ep. iv. 1, 2, 3. If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, fulfil ye my joy, that ye be like minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vain glory, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Phi. ii. 1, 2, 3. I beseech Euodias, and I beseech Syntyche that they be of the same mind in the Lord. Phi. iv. 2. Put on therefore as the elect of God, bowels of mercies, forbearing one another, and forgiving one another; if any man have a quarrel against any, even as Christ forgave you so also do ye. Col. iii. 12, 13. Follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient. 2 Ti. ii. 22, 23, 24. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. He. xii. 14. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Ja. i. 19, 20. Where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy ; and the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. Ja. iii. 16, 17, 18.

and all of you are the children of the Most High. But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes. Ps. lxxxii. 6, 7. Love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful, and to the evil. Lu. vi. 35. They which shall be accounted worthy to obtain the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage; neither can they die any more, for they are equal unto the angels, and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. Lu. xx. 36. Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God, for a sweet smelling savour. Ep. v. 1, 2. Do all things without murmurings and disputings, that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world, holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain. Phi. ii. 15, 16. Gird up the loins of your mind, as obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts, in your ignorance. But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, Be ye holy, for I am holy. 1 Pe. i. 14, 15, 16.

10 Are they which are persecuted, &c.] See chap. xxii. 6. When they persecute you in this city (said Jesus to his disciples), flee ye to another. Mat. x. 23. The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth. Ps. xxxvii. 12. But he (who hath left house, &c., for my sake and the Gospel's, said Jesus) shall receive an hundred fold, now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life. Mar. x. 30. Blessed are ye when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. Lu. vi. 22. They shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake. But there shall not an hair of your head perish. Lu. xxi. 12. 18. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you (said Jesus to his disciples). John xv. 20. And Saul was consenting unto his (Stephen's) death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the Church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. Ac.

viii. 1. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword (as it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long, we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter)? nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors, through him that loved us; for I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Ro. viii. 35-39. I think (said Paul) that God hath set forth us the Apostles last, as it were appointed to death, for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised. Even unto this present hour, we both hunger and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwelling-place, and labour, working with our own hands; being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it; being defamed, we entreat; we are made as the filth of the world, and are the off-scouring of all things unto this day. 1 Co. iv. 9-13. We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. 2 Co. xii. 17. Let your conversation be as it becometh the Gospel of Christ; and in nothing terrified by your adversaries, which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God. Phi. i. 28. If we suffer, we shall also reign with “him” (“ Christ'); if we deny him he will also deny us. 2 Ti. ii. 12. But thou hast fully known my persecutions, afflictions which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra, what persecutions I endured; but out of them all the Lord delivered me. 2 Ti. iii. 11. My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience; but let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. Ja i. 2—5. Who is a wise man, and endued with knowledge among you? Let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. Ja. iii. 13, 14. There is one Lawgiver who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another? Go to, now, ye that say, To-day

righteousness' sake: for their's is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed 11 are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

or to-morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain; whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away: for that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this or that. But now ye rejoice in your boastings; all such rejoicing is evil. Ja. iv. 12-16. We should love one another; not as Cain, who was that wicked one and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil and his brother's righteous. 1 John iii. 12. Fear none of those things which thou (the angel of the church at Smyrna) shalt suffer; behold, the Devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days; be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. Re. ii. 10.

For their's is the kingdom of God.] See verse 3, and com. We ourselves glory in you, in the churches of God, for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure; which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer, seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; and to you who are troubled, rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels. 2 Th. i. 4-7. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation, for when he is tried he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Ja. i. 12.

11 When men shall revile you, &c.] It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord: if they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household? Mat. x. 25. And they that passed by reviled "him" ("Jesus on the cross"), wagging their heads. Mat. xxvii. 39. False witnesses did rise up; they laid to my charge things that I knew not. Ps. xxxv. 11. Hear the word of the Lord, ye that tremble at his word; your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name's sake, said, Let the Lord be glorified. But he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed. Is. Ixvi. 5. John the Baptist came neither eating bread, nor drinking wine, and ye say, He hath a devil. The Son of man is come eating and drinking, and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a wine-bibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. Lu. vii. 33, 34. They" ("the Pharisees") reviled "him" ("the blind man whom Jesus restored to sight'),

and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples. John ix. 28. Who when he (Jesus) was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not, but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously. 1 Pe. ii. 23.

Falsely.] If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. 1 Pe. iv. 14.

For my sake.] Ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake; but he that endureth unto the end shall be saved (said Jesus to his disciples). And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles: and ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake, &c. He that findeth his life shall lose it; and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. Mat. x. 18. 22. 39. Every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundred fold, and shall inherit everlasting life. Mat. xix. 29. Then shall "they" (" the Jews") deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you; and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. Mat. xxiv. 9. For thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. Ps. xliv. 22. These are they which are sown on stony ground (said Jesus in the parable), who have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time; afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended. Mar. iv. 17. Whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the Gospel's, the same shall save it. Mar. viii. 35. Take heed to yourselves (said Christ to his disciples), for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them. And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake; but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. Mar. xiii. 9. 13. Blessed are ye when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. Lu. vi. 22. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. Lu. ix. 24. They shall lay their hands on you (said Christ to his disciples), and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake.

And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake. Lu. xxi. 12. 17. All these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me. John xv. 21. For I will shew "him" (" Paul") how great things he must suffer for my name's sake (said the Lord in a vision to Ananias). Ac. ix. 16. As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Ro. viii. 36. We are fools for Christ's sake; but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised. 1 Co. iv. 10. We which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. 2 Co. iv. 11. "Thou" ("the angel" of the church of Ephesus) hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars; and hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted. Re. ii. 2, 3. See chap. xix. 29.

12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad.] Rejoice ye in that day (when men shall persecute you) and leap for joy; for, behold, your reward is great in heaven, for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets. Lu. vi. 23. And "they" ("the apostles") departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. Ac. v. 41. At midnight Paul and Silas prayed (in the prison), and sang praises unto God, and the prisoners heard them. Ac. xvi. 25. We glory in tribulations also, knowing that tribulation worketh patience, and patience experience, and experience hope, and hope maketh not ashamed. Ro. v. 3, 4. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. 2 Co. iv. 17. Yea, and if (said Paul) I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy and rejoice with you all. Phi. ii. 17. Whereof (of which Gospel) I Paul am made a minister, who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh, for his body's sake, which is the church. Col. i. 24, 25. My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations. Ja. i. 2. Rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings, that when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. 1 Pe. iv. 13.

For great is your reward.] Take heed that ye do not your aims before men, to be seen of them, otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do, in the synagogues, and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily, I say unto you, they

have their reward. (See) that thine alms may be in secret, and thy Father which seeth in secret, himself shall reward thee openly; and when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. Moreover, when ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance; for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast; verily I say unto you, they have their reward. Mat. vi. 1. 2. 4. 5. 16. He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man, shall receive a righteous man's reward. And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only, in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in nowise lose his reward. Mat. x. 41, 42. The Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. Mat. xvi. 28. The word of the Lord came unto Abraham in a vision, saying, I am thy shield and thy exceeding great reward. Ge. xv. 1. The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee (said Boaz to Ruth) of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust. Ruth ii. 12. By "them" (God's "judgments") is thy servant warned, and in keeping of them there is great reward. Ps. xix. 11. Verily there is a reward for the righteous; verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth. Ps. lviii. 11. To him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward. Pr. xi. 18. Say ye to the righteous that it shall be well with him; for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. Is. iii. 10. Rejoice ye (when men shall hate you) in that day, and leap for joy; for, behold, your reward is great in heaven. Love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great. Lu. vi. 23. 35. He that planteth, and he that watereth are one; and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. 1 Co. iii. & Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inhe ritance; for ye serve the Lord Christ. Col. iii. 23, 24. He that cometh to God, must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Moses) when he was come to years refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward. He. xi. 6. 24. 26.

heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before

For so persecuted they the prophets.] When the time of the fruit drew near, he (the householder in the parable) sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. Again, he sent other servants more than the first, and they did unto them like wise. But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. Mat. xxi. 34-38. Ye be witnesses unto yourselves (said Jesus to the Scribes and Pharisees) that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers, ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? Wherefore, behold, I send you prophets, and wise men, and scribes, and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city. That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel, unto the blood of Zacharias, son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. Verily I say unto you, all these things shall come upon this generation. Mat. xxiii. 31-36. It was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the Lord, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water. Was it not told my lord (said Obadiah to Elijah) what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the Lord, how I hid an hundred men of the Lord's prophets in a cave, and fed them with bread and water? 1 Ki. xviii. 4. 13. Jezebel (the wife of Ahab) sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of "them" ("the prophets whom she slew") by to-morrow about this time. The children of Israel (said Elijah in the cave of Horeb to the angel of the Lord) have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword, and I only am left, and they seek my life to take it away. 1 Ki. xix. 2. 10. 14. Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found thee, because thou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the Lord. 1 Ki. xxi. 20. And the king of Israel said unto Jeho shaphat (the king of Judah), There is yet one man, (Micaiah the son of Imlah) by whom we may enquire of the Lord; but I hate him; for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And the king of Israel (Ahab) said, Take Micaiah and carry him back unto Ámon, the governor of the city, and to Joash the king's son, and say, Thus saith the king, Put

this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of affliction, and with water of affliction, until I come in peace! 1 Ki. xxii. 8. 26, 27. The king sent unto "him” (“ Elijah”) a captain of fifty with his fifty, and he went up to him (and, behold, he sat on the top of an hill): and he spake unto him, Thou man of God, the king hath said, Come down. 2 Ki. i. 9. Asa (king of Judah) was wroth with the seer (Hanani), and put him in a prison house, for he was in a rage with him because of this thing (that he said, Thou shalt have wars). 2 Ch. xvi. 10. And the spirit of God came upon Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, that ye cannot prosper? Because ye have forsaken the Lord he hath also forsaken you. And they con→ spired against him, and stoned him with stones, at the commandment of the king, in the court of the house of the Lord. Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son, and when he died, he said, The Lord look upon it, and require it. 2 Ch. xxiv. 20-22. They (the chief of the priests) mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against his people, till there was no remedy. 2 Ch. xxxvi. 16. Nevertheless they (the Israelites, though they possessed the land of Canaan,) were disobe dient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations. Ne. ix. 26. O generation, see ye the word of the Lord. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel, a land of darkness? Wherefore say my people, We are lords? We will come no more unto thee? Je. ii. 31. Now it came to pass, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that the Lord had commanded him to speak unto the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people took him, saying, Thou shalt surely die. And when Jehoiakim the king, with all his mighty men, and all the princes, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death: but when Urijah (the prophet) heard it, he was afraid, and fled, and went into Egypt. And they fetched forth Urijah out of Egypt, and brought him unto Jehoiakim the king, who slew him with the sword, and cast his dead body into the graves of the common people. Nevertheless, the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, that they should not give him into the hand of the people to put him to death. Je. xxvi. 8. 21-24. In like manner did their fathers unto the prophets. Lu. vi. 23. Woe unto you (Scribes and Pharisees), for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers
