59 commanded the body to be delivered. And when Joseph had 60 taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, And laid it

in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed. 61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over 62 against the sepulchre. Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together 63 unto Pilate, Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, 64 while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third

it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid. Lu. xxiii. 52, 53.

60 In his own new tomb.] And "he" ("the Messiah") made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Is. liii. 9.

A great stone.] See verse 66. And behold (when Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the sepulchre) there was a great earthquake for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. Mat. xxviii. 2. And they (the women at the sepulchre) said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? and when they looked they saw that the stone was rolled away, for it was very great. Mar. xvi. 3, 4. And " they ("the women") found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. Lu. xxiv. 2. The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, while it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre. John xx. 1.

See verse 56.

62 The day of the preparation.] Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover ? Mat. xxvi. 17. And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath. Mar. xv. 42. And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on. And the women also which came with him from Galilee followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid. And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath-day, according to the commandment. Lu. xxiii. 54, 55, 56. And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour; and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King! John xix. 14. "There" ("in the new sepulchre") laid they Jesus, therefore, because of the Jews' preparationday; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand. John xix. 42.

The chief priests and Pharisees.] See verses 1,2; and chap. xxiii. 13; xxvi. 3, 4.

63 That deceiver said.] And they (the whole multitude) began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Cesar, saying that he himself is Christ, a King. Lu xxiii. 2. And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him, for some said, He is a good man; others said, Nay, but he deceiveth the people. Are ye also deceived (said the Pharisees to the officers)! John vii. 12. 47. We then beseech you (said Paul) that ye receive not the grace of God in vain; giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed: but in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses; by honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true. 2 Co. vi. 8.

After three days.] See chap. xvi. 21. And "they" ("men") shall kill him (the Son of man), and the third day he shall be raised again. Mat. xvii. 23. And (the chief priests, &c.) shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him, and the third day he shall rise again. Mat. xx. 19. This fellow said (said the false witnesses to the Jews), I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days. Mat. xxvi. 61. And he (Jesus) began to teach them (his disciples) that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests and Scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. Mar. viii. 31. And "they" (“the Gentiles") shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him, and the third day he shall rise again. Mar. x. 34. The Son of man (suid Jesus) must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and chief priests, and Scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day. Lu. ix. 22. And they (the Gentiles) shall scourge him, and put him to death, and the third day he shall rise again. Ls. xviii. 33. He is not here (said the angels to the women at the sepulchre of Jesus), but is risen; remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first. Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch : 65 go your way, make it as sure as ye can. So they went, and made 66 the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

CHAPTER XXVIII.

"IN the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first I day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: 2

64 And steal him away.] Say ye (said the chief priests and elders to the watch), His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. Mat. xxviii. 13.

So the last error shall be worse, &c.] Then goeth he (the wicked spirit that had gone out of the man), and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Mat. xii. 45.

65 Make it as sure, &c.] Now when they" ("the disciples") were going (to tell the brethren that they should go into Galilee, where they should see Jesus), behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done. And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. So they took the money, and did as they were taught; and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews unto this day. Mat. xxviii. 11-15. Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee, the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain. Ps. lxxvi. 10. There is no wisdom, nor understanding, nor counsel against the Lord. Pr. xxi. 30.

66 Sealing the stone, and setting a watch.] And the stone was brought and laid upon the mouth of the (lions') den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords, that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel (who was cast into it). Da. vi. 17. Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his; and let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. 2 Ti. ii. 19.

CHAP. XXVIII.-1 The end of the sabbath.] And when the sabbath was past Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they

might come and anoint him. And very early in the morning, the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. Mar. xvi. 1, 2. And they (the women) returned and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath-day, according to the commandment. Lu. xxiii. 56. Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. Yea, and certain women also of our company (said the two disciples to Jesus, who appeared unto them on their way to Emaus) made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre. Lu. xxiv. 1. 22. first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre. Then she runneth and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.

The

Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre : so they ran both together, and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre. And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in. Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie; and the napkin that was about his head not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself. Then went in also that other disciple which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw and believed. For as yet they knew not the Scripture, that he must rise again from the dead. John xx. 1-9.

Mary Magdalene.] And (after Christ's body was laid in the new tomb) there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre. Mat. xxvii. 61. See chap. xxvii. 55, 56.

for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and 3 rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His counte4 nance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: And

prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed. Ac. xvi. 26.

For the angel of the Lord descended, &c.] And "they" ("the women") said, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre ? And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away; for it was very great: and entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. Mar. xvi. 3, 4, 5. And they (the women at the sepulchre) found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre ; and they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments; and as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? Lu. xxiv. 2-5. The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre. But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping; and as she wept, she stooped down and looked into the sepulchre; and seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him. John xx. 2. 11, 12, 13. And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. 1 Ti. iii. 16. Ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory; receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls, of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you; searching what, and what manner of time, the spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified before-hand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the Gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.

3 His countenance, &c.] And (Christ) was transfigured before "them" ("Peter, James, and John "), and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

Mat. xvii. 2. Bless the Lord, O my soul, who maketh his angels spirits, his ministers a flaming fire. Ps. civ. 4. I looked (said Ezekiel), and behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire. Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures (the four cherubims). And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings. And their feet were straight feet; the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf's foot: and they sparkled, like the colour of burnished brass. And they had the hands of a man under their wings: their wings were joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward. As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side and they four had the face of an ox on the left side: they four also had the face of an eagle. Thus were their faces; and their wings were stretched upward; two wings of every one were joined one to another; and two covered their bodies. And they went every one straight forward: whither the spirit was to go, they went; and they turned not when they went. As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning. And the living creatures ran, and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning. Ez. i. 4—14. Then "I" ("Daniel") lifted up mine eyes and looked, and behold a certain man, clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz: his body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude. Da. x. 5, 6. "His' (“the Son of man's") head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire: and his feet like unto fine brass, as if they had burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. And he had in his right hand seven stars; and out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword; and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength. Re. i. 14, 15, 16. And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud and a rainbow was upon his head; and his face was, as it were, the sun; and his feet as pil

lars of fire. Re. x. 1. And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. Re. xviii. 1.

His raiment white.] His raiment (Christ's, in his transfiguration) became shining, exceeding white as snow, so as no fuller on earth can white them. Mar. ix. 3. And (the women) entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. Mar. xvi. 5. And while they (his disciples) looked stedfastly toward heaven as he (Jesus) went up, behold two men stood by them in white apparel. Ac. i. 10. Thou hast a few names even in Sardis, which have not defiled their garments: and they shall walk with me in white, for they are worthy. He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. Re. iii. 4, 5.

4 The keepers.] See verse 11. Pilate said unto them (the chief priests), Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can. So they went and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch. Mat. xxvii. 65, 66.

Shake.] Fear came upon me and trembling, which made all my bones to shake. Job iv. 14. Fear took hold upon them there, and pain, as of a woman in travail. Ps. xlviii. 6. And I (Daniel) alone saw the vision, for the men that were with me saw not the vision; but a great quaking fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves. Da. x. 7. And as he (Saul) journeyed, he came near Damascus, and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: and he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man. Ac. ix. 3-7. Then he (the keeper of the prison at Philippi) called for a light and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, and brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? Ac. xvi. 29, 30. And when I saw him (the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle), I fell at his feet as dead, and he laid

his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last. Re. i. 17.

5 Fear not ye.] Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance. Is. Xxxv. 4. Fear thou not, for I am with thee: be not dismayed, for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I will help thee, saith the Lord, and thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. Is. xli. 10, 14. Then said "he" ("the angel") unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. Then there came again and touched me one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me, and said, O man, greatly beloved, fear not: peace be unto thee, be strong, yea, be strong. And when he had spoken unto me, I was strengthened, and said, Let my lord speak; for thou hast strengthened me. Da. x. 12. 19. And he (the angel) saith unto them (the women), Be not affrighted: ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified; he is risen, he is not here; behold the place where they laid him. Mar. xvi. 6. And when Zacharias (the father of John the Baptist) saw "him" (an "angel of the Lord"), he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias, for thy prayer is heard: and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. And the angel said unto her (when she was troubled at his saying), Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favour with God, &c. Lu. i. 12, 13. 30. Are they (the angels) not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? He. i. 14. And when I saw him (that was like the Son of man), I fell at his feet as dead; and he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not, I am the first and the last; I am he that liveth and was dead, and behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen: and have the keys of hell and of death. Re. i. 17, 18.

Ye seek Jesus.] Glory ye in his name; let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord. Seek the Lord, and his strength: seek his face evermore. Ps. cv. 3, 4. And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? Lu. xxiv. 5. And "they ("the angels at the sepulchre") say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken

away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him. And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. John xx. 13, 14, 15. 6 As he said.] See chap. xii. 40. And as they came down from the mountain (of transfiguration), Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen from the dead. Mat. xvii. 9. And (the chief priests) shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him and the third day he shall rise again. Mat. xx. 19. Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night; for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee. Mat. xxvi. 30, 31. And he (Jesus) began to teach them (his disciples) that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and of the chief priests, and Scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. Mar. viii. 31. He is not here (said the angels to the women at Jesus' sepulchre), but is risen. Remember how he spake unto you, when he was yet in Galilee, saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again and they remembered his words. And when "they" (the "women") found not his body (said the two disciples going to Emaus to Jesus, who appeared to them), they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. And he (Jesus) said unto "them" ("the eleven, soon after"), These are the words which I spake unto you while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the Psalms, concerning me. Lu. xxiv. 6, 7, 8. 23. 44. Therefore doth my Father love me (said Jesus), because I lay down my life that I might take it again. John x. 17.

Come, see the place.] And he (the angel at the sepulchre) said unto "them " ("the women"), Be not affrighted; ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him. Mar. xvi. 6. Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre, and stooping

down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass. La. xxiv. 12. So they (Peter and John) ran both together, and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre. And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in. Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie; and the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself. Then went in also that other disciple which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw and believed. John xx. 4-9.

7 Go quickly, &c.] See verse 10. Go your way (said the angel to the woman), tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you. And they went out quickly and fled from the sepulchre, for they trembled, and were amazed, neither said they any thing to any man, for they were afraid. Mar. xvi. 7, 8. And she (Mary Magdalene) went and told "them" ("the disciples") that had been with him, as they mourned and wept. And they (the two disciples to whom Jesus appeared as he walked and went into the country) went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them. Mar. xvi. 10. 13. And (the women) returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest. It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles. Yea (said the two disciples going to Emaus to Jesus, rho appeared unto them), and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre. And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said. But him they saw not. The Lord is risen indeed (said the two disciples to the residue), and hath appeared to Simon. Lu. xxiv. 9, 10. 22, 23, 24. 34. Touch me not (said Jesus to Mary Magdalene), for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father and your Father, and to my God and your God. Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her. Joks xx. 17, 18.
