as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: 33 him they compelled to bear his cross. And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, 34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he 35 had tasted thereof, he would not drink. And they crucified him,

might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. He. xiii. 12. 32 As they came out, &c.] If the priest that is anointed do sin according to the sin of the people, then let him bring for his sin, which he hath sinned, a young bullock without blemish unto the Lord for a sin offering; even the whole bullock shall he carry forth without the camp unto a clean place, where the ashes are poured out, and burn him on the wood with fire; where the ashes are poured out shall he be burnt. He shall carry forth the bullock without the camp, and burn him as he burned the first bullock: it is a sin offering for the congregation. Le. iv. 3. 12, 21. And the Lord said unto Moses, The man (that gathered sticks) shall be surely put to death. And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died, as the Lord commanded Moses. Nu. xv. 35, 36. See verse 31.

They found a man.] If any man will come after me (said Jesus), let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me. Mat. xvi. 24. And they compel one Simon, a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross. Mar. xv. 21. And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. Lu. xxiii. 26.

Cyrene.] How hear we every man in our own tongue wherein we were born? Parthians, Medes, &c. dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judea, Phrygia, and Pamphylia in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya, about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes! Ac. ii. 9, 10. Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia, and of Asia, disputing with Stephen. Ac. vi. 9. And some of them (that were scattered abroad upon the persecution about Stephen) were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus. Ac. xi. 20. Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers, as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. Ac. xiii. 1.

33 Golgotha.] And they bring him (Jesus) unto the place called Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull. Mar.

xv. 22. And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. But Jesus, turning unto them, said, Daughters of Jernsalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For behold, the days are coming in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us for if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry? And there were two others, malefactors, led with him to be put to death. And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. Lu. xxii. 27-33. And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha. John xix. 17.

34 Gave him vinegar, &c.] See verse 48. They gave me also gall for my meat, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. P. xix. 21. And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh. Mar. xv. 23. After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar; and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished; and he bowed his head, and gave the ghost. John xix. 28, 29, 30.

up 35 They crucified him.] Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shail be betrayed unto the chief priests, and unto the Scribes, and they shall condemn him to death. Mat. xx. 18. His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day: (for he that is harged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance. De. xxi. 23. Dogs have compassed me; the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. Ps. xxii. 16. And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. Zec. xii. 10. Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son

and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. And sitting 36 down they watched him there; And set up over his head his 37 accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on 38

of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the Scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles: and they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again. Mar. x. 33, 34. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up. John iii. 14. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man? John xii. 32. 34. And when he had so said (Peace be unto you), he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad when they saw the Lord. Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. Then saith "he" ("Jesus") to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side; and be not faithless, but believing. John xx. 20. 25. 27. Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.

Ac. iv. 10.

Parted his garments.] And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them what every man should take. Mar. xv. 24. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. Lu. xxiii. 34. Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did. John xix. 23, 24.

That it might be fulfilled.] They parted my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. Ps. xxii. 18.

36 Sitting down, &c.] See verse 54. And when the centurion which stood over against him saw that he (Jesus) so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God. And Pilate marvelled if he VOL. II.

were already dead; and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead. Mar. xv. 39. 44.

37 His accusation written.] And the superscription of his accusation was written over, The King of the Jews! Mar. xv. 26. And a superscription also was written over him, in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, This is the King of the Jews. Lu. xxiii. 38. And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross; and the writing was, Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews. This title then read many of the Jews; for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city; and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. John xix. 19-22.

38 Two thieves crucified with him, &c.] See verse 44. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he hath poured out his soul unto death; and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Is. liii. 12. And with him they crucify two thieves, the one on his right hand, and the other on his left; and the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors. Mar. xv. 27, 28. I say unto you (said Jesus), that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors; for the things concerning me have an end. Lu. xxii. 37. And there were also two others, malefactors, led with him to be put to death. And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? and we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou contest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To-day thou shalt be with me in paradise. Lu. xxiii. 32, 33. 39-43. They Nn

39 the right hand, and another on the left. And they that passed 40 by reviled him, wagging their heads, And saying, Thou that

crucified him (at Golgotha), and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath-day, (for that sabbath-day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then came the soldiers and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him; but when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs, but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. And he that saw it bare record, and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. John xix. 18. 31–35.

39 Reviled him, &c.] But I am a worm, and no man, and despised of the people. All they that see me laugh me to scorn; they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. I may tell all my bones; they look and stare upon me. Ps. xxii. 6, 7, 8. 17. I was a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially among my neighbours, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without fled from me. I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel. For I have heard the slander of many, fear was on every side; while they took counsel against me, they devised to take away my life. Ps. xxxi. 11 -13. In mine adversity they rejoiced and gathered themselves together; yea, the abjects gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; they did tear me, and ceased not: with hypocritical mockers in feasts, they gnashed upon me with their teeth. Lord, how long wilt thou look on? Rescue my soul from their destructions; my darling from the lions. I will give thanks in the great congregation: I will praise thee among much people. Let not them that are mine enemies wrongfully rejoice over me, neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a For they speak not peace, but they devise deceitful matters against them that are quiet in the land; yea, they opened their mouth wide against me, and said, Aha, aha! our eye hath seen it. Ps. xxxv. 15-21. For thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face. I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children. For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me. When I wept and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach: I made sackcloth also my garment, and I became a proverb to them. They that sit in the

gate speak against me, and I was the song of the drunkards. Reproach hath broken my heart, and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none. Ps. lxix. 7-12. 20. The mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened against me. They have spoken against me with a lying tongue; I became also a reproach unto them when they looked upon me they shaked their heads. Ps. cix. 2. 25. Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? Behold and see, if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow which is done unto me, wherewith the Lord hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger. La. i. 12. All that pass by clap their hands at thee: they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying. Is this the city that men call The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth? All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee; they hiss and gnash the teeth; they say, We have swallowed her up; certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it. The Lord hath done that which he had devised; he hath fulfilled his word that he had commanded in the days of old he hath thrown down, and hath not pitied; and he hath caused thine enemy to rejoice over thee: he hath set up the horn of thine adversaries. La. ii. 15, 16, 17. And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself, and come down from the cross. Mar. xv. 29, 30. And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others: let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, and saying, If thou be the King of the Jews, save thyself. And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, This is the King of the Jews. And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. Lu. xxiii. 35-39. Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps; who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth. Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not, but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously. Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness; by whose stripes ye were healed. 1 Pe. ii. 21 -24.

40 Saying, Thou that destroyest.] Behold, this dreamer cometh; come, now, therefore,

destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. Likewise 41 also the chief priests mocking him, with the Scribes and elders, said, He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the 42 King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will

and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit (said Joseph's brethren), and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him. And we shall see what will become of his dreams. Ge. Xxxvii. 19, 20. And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over "them" ("the two witnesses"), and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth. Re. xi. 10.

That destroyest the temple.] This fellow said (said the false witnesses), I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days. Mat. xxvi. 61. Which of you intending to build a tower sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. Lu. xiv. 28, 29, 30. Destroy this temple (said Jesus), and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building; and wilt thou rear it up in three days? But he spake of the temple of his body. When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them, and they believed the Scripture, and the word which Jesus had said. John ii. 19-22. If thou be the Son of God.] See verse 54. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. If thou be the Son of God (said the tempter again), cast thyself down; for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee, and in their hands shall they bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Mat. iv. 3. 6. I adjure thee (said the high priest to Jesus), by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said. Nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Mat. xxvi. 63, 64.

Come down from the cross.] A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign, and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: and he left them and departed. Mat. xvi. 4. And he (Abraham) said unto "him" ("the rich man in the parable"), If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rose from the dead. Lu. xvi. 31. 41 The chief priests mocking him, &c.] Is

it good that he (God) should search you out (said Job to his friends)? or as one man mocketh another, do ye so mock him? Job xiii. 9.

Many bulls have compassed me, strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. Ps. xxii. 12, 13. Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together that rejoice at mine hurt; let them be clothed with shame and dishonour that magnify themselves against me. Ps. XXXV.

36. Now, therefore, be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong; for I have heard from the Lord God of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth. Is. xxviii. 22. Thus saith the Lord, the redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the Lord that is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose thee. Is. xlix. 7. Three shepherds also I cut off in one month, and my soul loathed them; and their soul also abhorred me. Zec. xi. 8. Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves, with the Scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save. Let Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe; and they that were crucified with him reviled him. Mar. xv. 31, 32. He shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted

on.

Lu. xviii. 32. Then Jesus said unto the chief priests and captains of the people, and the elders which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves? Lu. xxii. 52. And the people stood beholding and the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ the chosen of God. Lu. xxiii. 35.

:

42 Saved others.] Then again called they the man that was born blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner. John ix. 24. When "he" ("the nobleman of Capernaum ") heard that Jesus was come out of Judea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. John iv. 47. And (the Jews) beholding the man which was healed (by Peter) standing with them, they could say nothing against it. Ac. iv. 47.

The King of Israel.] See verse 37. Where is he (said the wise men) that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the

worship him. Mat. 43 Trusted in God.] Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Ps. iii. 2. Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the Lord is his refuge. Ps. xiv. 6. He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him; let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. Ps. xxii. 8. As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God? Ps. xlii. 10. They that lay wait for my soul take counsel together, saying, God hath forsaken him: persecute and take him, for there is none to deliver him. Ps. lxxi. 11. Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord (said Rabshakeh), saying, The Lord will surely deliver us; this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria. Hearken not to Hezekiah, for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig-tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern, until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards. Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The Lord will deliver

us.

Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? Is. xxxvi. 15-18. Let not thy God in whom thou trustest deceive thee (continued Rabshakeh), saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. Is. xxxvii. 10.

For

I am the Son of God.] See verse 40. God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved. John iii. 16, 17. Jesus answered "them" (the "Jews"), My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God. Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do; for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth; and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. For as the Father raiseth up the dead and quickeneth them, even so the

Son quickeneth whom he will. For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son, that all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God and they that hear shall live. Joks v. 17-25. I and my Father are one. of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world (said Jesus to the Jews), Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God? John x. 30. 36. We have a law (said the Jews), and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God. John xix. 7. See verse 44.

Say ye

The thieves also.] See verse 38. They that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock. Among the bushes they brayed; under the nettles they were gathered. They were children of fools, yea, children of base men. They were viler than the earth, and now am I their song; yea, I am their byword. Job xxx. 7, 8, 9. In mine adversity they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together; yea, the abjects gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; they did tear me, and ceased not. XXXV. 15. Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe; and they that were crucified with him reviled him. Mar. xv. 52. And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. And the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? Lu. xxii. 39, 40.

Ps.

45 From the sixth hour.] And it was the third hour, and they crucified him. And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Mar. xv. 25. 33, 34. And it was about the sixth hour; and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. Lu. xxiii. 44, 45.
