(12.) Prefently after we have this Claufe: 'E 28 ἑνὸς καὶ δευτέρα προσοχή τοσαύτην τον έχει. Si enim unius & alterius oratio tantam vim habet. Sure the Reddition in the Larger compleats the Original Sentence of Ignatius, " + xesòv ev autoïs isáva. Which Reddition is entirely wanting in the Smaller. This Defect feems to imply, that the Smaller here is only an Abridgment of the Larger.

(14.) Soon after we have this Phrafe, Mnduia teis veleisty v úμiv. Neq; una lis complexa eft in vobis. Which Phrase is, I believe, a perfect Stranger to the Greek Language.

(15.) As is alfo this which follows, Kai agrico μιας ὑμῶν ἐφεσίων ἐκκλησίας. Caftificetur a veftra Ephe fiorum ecclefia. This feems only a Blunder, or Mif-reading of fome ignorant Fellow, for the true one in the Larger Copy, Kai & áporáms epsσίων ἐκκλησίας.

(16.) This next Affertion is not much better "A j xì x7" qasry wiNETE TOUTH TIdμaring. Qua autem & fecundum carnem operata funt hæc fpiritualia funt. Hear the Parallel Words of the Larger Epiftle, and tell me which are the most like to Paul and Ignatius : ἐδὲν σαρκικὸν, ἀλλὰ πνευματικά πάντα ωρά

(17.) Hear another Paffage in the Smaller, which prefently follows: Βύσαντες τὰ ὦτα, εἰς τὸ μὴ παραδέξας τα περίμενα ὑπ' αὐτῶν, ὡς ὄντες λίθος vas warços. Obftruentes aures, ad non recipere feminata ab ipfis, ut exiftentes lapides templi Patris. This feems an ill contriv'd Abridgment of a Noble Context in the Larger; and by introducing Men ftopping their Ears, that they may not hear what sfowed by the Hereticks, as being Stones of the Temple of God, does fo jumble together inconfi

ftent Metaphors, that one cannot, without great Injustice, afcribe it to fo great a Man as Ignatius.

(18.) Soon after follow thefe Words: Пe's 's Se&t. 10. ἐργες αὐτῶν ὑμεῖς πραείς. Πρὸς τὰς μεγαλορημοσμύας αὐτῶν ὑμεῖς ταπεινόφρονες. Πρὸς τὰς βλασφημίας αὐτῶν ὑμεῖς πρό σουλάς. Προς το πλάνην αὐτῶν ὑμεῖς ἑδαῖοι τῇ πίσω. Ad iras ipforum vos menfueti; ad magniloquia eorum vos humilia fapientes; ad blafphemias ipforum vos orationes; ad errorem ipforum vos firmi fide. This is plainly an ill-digefted Abridgment of the Larger Copy here; which never wants Verbs and Words of Connection, as the Smaller so often does.

(19.) Then it follows, Tie nov dundeï; is Ibid. αποςερηθείς τίς ἀθετηθεί; ἵνα μὴ τὸ διαβολο βοτάνη τις εν seo cv vμïv. Quis plus injuftum patiatur? quis fraudetur? quis contemnatur? ut non diaboli herba quis inveniatur in vobis. A fine Paffage for Ignatius to write.

(20.) Yet is the next rather worfe: "H8 Sect. 11. μέλλκς ὀργὴν φοβηθώμεν, ἢ ἐνες ἃ χάριν ἀγαπήσω χρό

εν τω δύο μόνον ἐν χειςῷ ἰησί ευρεθῆναι εἰς τὸ ἀληθινὸν
ῆν. χωείς τέτε μηδὲν ὑμῖν πρεπέτω, ἐν τῷ τὰ δέσμα π
φέρω, του πνευματικές μαργαρίτας, ἐν τις λύοιτο μου
εναςῆναι.

down fuch incoherent Paffages is fufficiently to
expose them.

(21.) Soon after the Words me ist, seem Sect. 12; only put for magadís, which are in the Larπαραδοθείς ger,according to good Senfe,and the Coherence of the Place. And indeed this Abridger feems in many Places, either not to have been able, or at leaft not to have been willing to read and abridge

truly thofe Words that lay before him in the Larger.

(22.) Prefently we have this Affertion conto cerning Paul: Ὃς ἐν πάσῃ ἐπιςολή μνημονεύει όμων. Qui in omni Epiftola memoriam facit veftri. I doubt this is by no means true in any fair Senfe whatfoever. Polycarp intimates, that Paul wrote 'EmEpift. adds, more than one Epiftle to the Philippians: Philip. And Paul himfelf feems to hint the fame thing; Τὰ αὐτὰ βάφειν ὑμῖν ἐμοὶ μὴρ ἐκ ὀκνηρὸν, ὑμῖν ἢ ἀσφα Phil, III. Aás. But that Paul wrote more than one Epistle to the Ephefians, we have no Reason to believe. And to lay that Paul made mention of them in every Epistle,fuppofing he had written two to them, beris ftill not very proper. But to fay fo with Regard to the reft of Paul's Epiftles, is utterly falfe: And yet to render thofe Words in the whole Epistle, feems hardly fatisfactory. So that after all, I fear thefe are not the Words of Paul's Bifhop Ignatius.

(23.) It follows foon after; Ev ĥ as oneμos ταργεῖν ἐπερανίων ἢ ἐπιγείων ὧν ἐδὲν λανθάνει ὑμᾶς. x. λ. In qua omne bellum evacuatur cæleftium & terreftrium: quorum nullum latet vos, &c. I doubt this is utterly falfe; for I do not perceive that any Chriftian is fo perfectly acquainted with the invifible Powers, that none of them are hidden from him. The Larger Copy is more rational and confiftent in this Place.

Sect. 14. (24.) Yet is the next Affertion more hardly to be reconcil'd with Truth, and with the Scripture: Ουδείς πίςιν ἐπαγγελλόμονΘ ἁμαρτάνει. Nullus 2 fidem repromittens peccat. The Larger has it, peiAs aμagтager. I fuppofe every body will allow this to be the truer Reading.

(25) Soon after we have thefe Words: "Iva Set. 15. ο μεν αυτό ναοὶ, καὶ αὐτὸς ἢ ἐν ἡμῖν Θεὸς ἡμῶν, ὅπες και στον κ φανήσει προ προσώπε ἡμῶν, ἐξ ὧν δικαίως ἀγαπῶς

now wrote the longeft of all his Epiftles, a Se cond Epistle, or Little Book. I rather fuppofe, that this counterfeit Ignatius intended to make way by this forged Claufe for fome other He retical Book, to pafs under the fame Name of Ignatius: Efpecially when the Larger Copy has not a Syllable relating to any fuch Matter here or elsewhere. If the ia 'Iyvans, mentioned in later Ages, were a Book diftinct from his Epiftles, Genuine or Spurious, 'tis not impoffible but it might be that very little Book here hinted at by this Interpolator. But it being entirely loft to us, we can determine nothing in this Cafe.

(30.) In the Smaller Epiftle to the Magnefians we have the Phrases, un xãde tỹ ñdinig to bmonow: Non couți ætate Epifcopi. Andançótus + qœuroufúny vEwTĽúv Táğıy° Non affumentes juniorem ordinem: For not defpifing the Bishop on Account of his Youth. These Phrafes I do not underftand the Propriety of; efpecially in Comparifon of the proper Word in the Larger, w, which, as Bishop Pearfon here obferves, is Paul's Tim. iv. own Word upon the like Occafion: And fo T fhould think most likely to be us'd by Paul's own Bishop, Ignatius.

(31.) Soon after we find God the Father ftil'd the Univerfal Bishop: Ter honóry. Omnium Epifcopo. Accordingly in the Smaller Epiftle to the Romans, we have the like Phrase: ns, speaking of the Church of Antioch, dvr que moiWhile TWS Dew 2819). Qua pro me Paftore Deo utiτῷ Θεῷ tur. Yet do I not remember, that any other but Chrift, is ftil'd the Shepherd of the Church in all the Records of Primitive, Christianity. As he is alfo by the Larger Copy in this later Place: and the Phrase excellently confirm'd by a Quotation out of the New Teftament "Has avt' èμã ποιμπρα
