with United Presbyterians, gave in a Report | to the effect-"That the Committee held a conference on the 10th of January last, which was attended by delegates from the United Presbyterian Presbyteries of Carlisle, Lancashire, London, and Newcastle-onTyne, when a full and fraternal discussion took place on the supposed points of difference between the two Churches, and on the desirableness and practicability of a union between them. At the close of this conference a gratifying conviction was left on the minds of the members that a large and substantial identity exists between the two bodies, and the brethren parted with sentiments of greatly augmented mutual affection." The Report suggested to the Synod to appoint a larger Committee to watch overthis matter, and to ascertain more particularly the points of difference between the two bodies, at the same time recommending to the ministers and congregations of this Church to cultivate fraternal intercourse. While this subject was under discussion the hour for adjournment arrived. SIXTH DAY.-Monday. After devotional exercises, the following deputations were appointed :-To the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland-The Moderator, Mr. Welsh, and Dr. Mackenzie, ministers; Messrs. R. Barbour, and H. M. Matheson, elders. To the Presbyterian Church in Ireland-The Moderator, Mr. Munro (of Manchester), and Mr. Terras, ministers; with Mr. Thornton and Mr. Glover, elders. It was agreed that a pastoral letter be addressed by the Synod to the congregations of the Church, urging specially the propriety and duty of renewed efforts on behalf of the Evangelistic Schemes, and more especially to recommend the importance of forming congregational associations for their support. A Committee was appointed to prepare the letter, with Dr. Hamilton convener. The Synod agreed to recognize the station at Dalston as a full charge, and instructed the Presbytery of London to take the necessary steps in the case. It was agreed that a petition be prepared and forwarded to the King of Sweden on behalf of religious liberty in that country. The Synod resumed consideration of the Report on union with United Presbyterians, and, after a lengthened discussion, a Motion was passed re-appointing the Committee, with considerable additions, recommending ministers and congregations to cultivate fraternal intercourse with those of the United Presbyterian Church, and recommending the Committee to keep steadily in view the principles of the Church, as set forth in the Confession and Catechisms, &c. The Belgian Deputation was next introduced by the Clerk. The Synod was addressed, in French, by Mons. Durand, who gave an interesting account of the important work still carried on by the Evangelical Church in Belgium. The Deputation received the thanks of the Court. An application, transmitted through the Presbytery of Cumberland, was received from the Rev. David Edwards, minister of the Church of England, in deacon's orders, for admission into the Presbyterian Church in England. The Synod remitted the case back to the Presbytery of Cumberland, to make farther inquiries, and appoint Mr. Edwards to appear before the Board of Examinators appointed on Saturday, who shall report to the Presbytery their opinion of his attainments; and the Synod authorized the Presbytery to take such further steps as may appear necessary, and, if satisfied on a conjoint view, to admit him as a probationer of the Church. The Report of the Committee on Psalmody was given in by Mr. Chalmers, the con vener. The Committee was re-appointed, with instructions to transmit copies of the hymnbook to all the members of Synod, through Presbyteries, requesting returns to be made not later than the 1st of January, 1856, in order that the Committee may report to next Synod. The Report of the Synod Fund was given in and read by Mr. Lonie, the treasurer. The Synod agreed to enter upon its records a memorial of their estimation of the late Mr. W. Stevenson, and James Nisbet, Esq., both deceased. It was resolved that the Synod meet on the third Monday in April, 1856, in St. George's Church, Liverpool, and that the ministers and elders in Liverpool be a Committee of Arrangements. The thanks of the Synod were accorded to Mr. Burns for his conduct as Moderator last year, and his excellent sermon preached at the opening of the present Meeting of Synod; also to Dr. Hamilton, the Session of Regent-square Church, and to all who have shown hospitality and kindness to the members, during the sittings of Synod; after which the Moderator delivered a closing address, and the proceedings terminated with praise and prayer. Presbyterian Church in England. SYNOD'S FOREIGN MISSION. COLLECTION-SABBATH, 20TH MAY. By appointment of Synod, the annual collection in aid of the Foreign Mission Fund will be made in all our congregations on Sabbath, the 20th inst. A glance at the Accounts annexed to our present number will show that the large balance for some years remaining at the credit of this fund is now all but expended, and that a considerable increase to the recent annual revenue must therefore be obtained in order to maintain even our present limited staff of missionaries in China. We earnestly solicit the attention of our readers to the Annual Report of the Committee, which will be found in another portion of our pages, from which it will be seen that few Mission-fields are so fraught with deepening interest, or have so strong a claim upon our liberality and prayers. Collections should be remitted, when made, to H. M. Matheson, Esq., 3, Lombard-street, London. Collections and Donations. HOME MISSION FUND.
