To THE advantages of this Epitome of JOHNSON'S Dictionary of the English Language, adapted to every purpose of general reference, are too well known to be enlarged upon. The rapid sale of numerous editions of this small volume sufficiently demonstrates the public approbation of its utility and importance. In the present edition, the publishers have exerted very considerable industry and care in rendering this popular compilation as complete as its limits would admit. the embellishment of a new, well-proportioned, and beautiful type, has been added a very exact revision of the press. The words, and their different definitions, have been carefully collated with TODD's enlarged edition of JOHNSON's Dictionary, the most perfect model of lexicography in the language, and the accentuation has been accurately adjusted by the Dictionaries of SHERIDAN and WALKER, the standard authorities in pronunciation. The vocabulary of Greek, Latin, and Scripture proper names, it is hoped, will prove a valuable addition to this Manual. The table of Scotticisms, &c. are greatly enlarged, the Chronological and Historical Table is continued to the present time, and other important alterations made upon the whole. * With these improvements, the Publishers offer the present edition to the Public, relying on a patronage proportionate to its superior comprehensiveness, correctness, and elegance.
