INTRODUCTORY ESSAY,

A CORDIAL attachment to the Church of this Nation can be expected only from those who have assured themselves of the reasons which commend that communion, rather than any other, to their approbation. This, of course, involves the admission of the principle of private judgment, which underlies the whole of that great movement which, a little more than three centuries ago, reviewed and remodelled the system alike of Doctrine and of Ritual, and determined, with the consent of the Nation, the future form of both.

Submission to authority may be claimed and conceded, while no true allegiance is yielded to the ruling Power. Now, that which is conceivable in civil relationships, does certainly take place in the A 2
