1929. Written in commemoration of the one hundredth anniversary of the publication of the Nephite Record. Through revelation, Joseph Smith translated and published the Book of Mormon, organized The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and received revelations to guide the Church. By inspiration, he called Apostles and other Church leaders, defined doctrines, and taught the principles and ordinances that would lead to exaltation. The Message and Character of the Book of Mormon was written for the purpose of trying to aid in making the Nephite Record more enticing to young persons than it seems to be at present, by furnishing them with information enough to make them understand the Book when they once take it in their hands, to become interested, it may be, in its contents, and perhaps to be led to read it intelligently.
