PREFACE.

THIS work, in its original form, is a course of sermons forming a treatise upon the eleventh and twelfth verses of the first chapter of the epistle to the Colossians. They were preached in the latter end of the year 1642, by Nicholas Lockyer, a divine of considerable eminence, afterwards provost of Eton; and were published by order of the House of Commons.

In the present edition some passages have been omitted which had reference to the state of political affairs and to historical events of that period, and obsolete words are exchanged for others of the same meaning. The full title is, " Balm for bleeding England and Ireland; or, Seasonable Instructions for persecuted Christians :" but the title immediately prefixed to the work is, "Useful Instructions for these Evil Times." The object of the preacher, however, having been to alarm the sinner and encourage the believer, the greater part of his work, which is now reprinted, is as applicable to England at the present day as when first published. It was not requisite to retain references to painful events long since passed, and which in reality had no necessary connexion with the valuable spiritual instructions contained in this volume.
