SAINT PIERRE ET SAINT JEAN

GUÉRISSANT UN BOITEUX.

Après la descente du Saint-Esprit, les apôtres faisaient continuellement des miracles. « Un jour saint Pierre et saint Jean montaient au temple pour assister à la prière de la neuvième heure. Or il y avait un homme estropié dès sa naissance, qui se plaçait tous les jours à l'entrée du temple à l'endroit nommé la belle porte, pour demander la charité à ceux qui entraient et sortaient. Cet homme voyant Pierre et Jean, les priait de lui donner l'aumone. Pierre, accompagné de Jean, considérant ce pauvre, lui dit : Regardez-nous; et il les regardait attentivement dans l'espérance qu'ils lui donneraient quelque chose. Alors Pierre lui dit : Je n'ai ni or ni argent, mais ce que j'ai je vous le donne; au nom de Jésus-Christ de Nazareth, levez-vous et marchez. En même temps, le prenant par la main droite, il le releva, et à l'instant ses jambes et ses pieds furent affermis. »

C'est ce moment que Raphael a représenté dans le tableau. Parmi les Israélites présens à cette scène, on en voit qui paraissent croire aux paroles de l'apôtre, tandis que d'autres semblent témoigner leur mécontentement de ce qu'on ose invoquer le nom de Dieu pour faire une chose qui leur paraît impossible.

Ce tableau est le troisième de la suite des cartons d'Hampton Court.

ST. PETER AND ST. JOHN

HEALING A LAME MAN.

After the descent of the Holy Ghost, the Apostles performed many miracles. « Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple: Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John', said, Lock on us. And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something from them. Then Peter said, silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee : In the name of Jesus-Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up and immediately his feet and ancle bones received strength. »

This is the moment which Raphael has represented in his picture. Amongst the Israelites present at the scene, some appear to believe in the words of the Apostle, whilst others seem to testify their discontent at any one daring to call upon the name of God to do a thing, which, to them, appears impossible. This picture is the third in the series of the Hampton Court Cartoons.
