Chapter I

Introductory

THE word religion is sometimes so used as to include morality; but for our present purpose religion may be defined to be the adjustment of our relation to God, and morality to be the adjustment of our relation to our fellow-men.)

To some it appears that religion is not an essential part of right character, and that the word morality stands for the entire duty of man. On hearing such expressions as "The mere moralist," it is felt that the speaker has failed to appreciate the value of morality.
