While the French army in Egypt was reposing from its fatigues in Cairo, after the celebrated battle of the Pyramids, a general insurrection of the inhabitants suddenly broke out, the 20, October, 1798. At daybreak, a large body of the insurgents moved towards the grand mosque. General Dupuy, who hastened first to the spot, was massacred, with several of his attendants at the same time, the Arabs appeared at the gates of the city, and an obstinate combat began in various quarters. After a murderous contest, the rebels were forced to submission, and orders were given to conduct their chiefs to the square of El-Bekır, one of the most spacious of the city: thither the commander in chief, Bonaparte, accompanied by his staff, repaired, and announced to them that they were pardoned. : Such is the subject of M. Guerin's picture. On the left, leaning on a cannon, is Murat iu a hussar's uniform in the centre, near Bonaparte, is the interpreter who is conveying his words to the people of Cairo: the right is occupied by the insurgents and their escort of French dragoons. This picture made a part of the exhibition of 1808, and it is now in the gallery of the Luxemburg. It has been engraved by M. Pigeot. Width, 15 feet 11 inches; height, 10 feet 7 inches. 833. Tandis que l'armée française était en Égypte, après avoir gagné la célèbre bataille des Pyramides, elle cherchait à oublier ses fatigues, et prenait quelques repos dans l'intérieur du Caire. Le 20 octobre 1798, on vit tout à coup éclater un soulėvement général de la population. A la pointe du jour un rassemblement considérable se porta vers la grande mosquée. Le général Dupuy, qui se dirigea le premier vers ce point, fut massacré avec quelques-uns des siens. En même temps les Arabes se montrèrent aux portes de la ville; un combat acharné se livra sur plusieurs points. Les Français, après une action meurtrière, contraignirent les révoltés à l'obéissance, et l'ordre fut donné d'amener les principaux d'entre eux sur la place d'El-Bekir, l'une des plus spacieuses de la ville. Le général en chef Bonaparte y vint accompagné de son état-major, et annonça aux révoltés qu'il leur faisait grâce de la vie. Tel est le sujet du tableau exécuté par M. Guérin. A gauche, appuyé sur un canon, est Murat, en uniforme de hussard. Au centre, près du général Bonaparte, se voit l'interprète, qui transmet aux habitans du Caire les paroles du général en chef. La droite du tableau est occupée par les révoltés et des dragons français qui leur servent d'escorte. Ce tableau fit partie de l'exposition de 1808; il est maintenant dans la galerie du Luxembourg.
