ÉCOLE FLAMANDE. P. BREUGHEL. GAL.

PROSERPINE IN HELL.

The painter Peter Breughel the younger, is often called Hellish Breughel, on account of his fondness for conflagrations and diabolical subjects. Of this taste we have an example in the little picture before us; in which he represents Proserpine at the moment of her arrival in Hell, instead of that selected by all other artists, ancient and modern, when she is carried off from the smiling plains of Sicily.

The daughter of Ceres is descending from her car, and seems impatient to fly the spot where are seated the furies, Alecto, Megara and Tisiphone. But in averting her eyes from these implacable divinities, they every where meet the monstrous shapes that torment mortals.

The back-ground offers a range of lofty moutains, whence issues a broad river, on which are seen several barks, filled with souls that have just left the earth.

This fine picture, which is painted on copper, is in the gallery of Dresden. It has never been engraved.

Width, 1 feet 4 inches; height, 1 foot.
