The dress Mignard has given to saint Cecilia is quite ideal, he is so much the more to be excused for it, as we don't know precisely at what time and in what country this illustrious martyr lived. Some set her death towards the end of the second century, others in the fourth. There are authors who assert she belonged to the Cecilius-roman family, and that, married against her will, she converted her husband Valerian to the faith of Jesus-Christ and was allowed by him to keep her virginity. Other authors say she went to Sicily and there suffered martyrdom. We don't know the reason why she is looked upon as the patroness of musicians, except that in 821 Pope Pascal the first trusted the monks in whose monastery her tomb was, with the office of singing God's praises night and day. This picture, on which Mignard has left impressed the type of his genius, is done in an easy and agreeable manner. Ce tableau, dans lequel Mignard a donné le cachet de son talent, est d'un pinceau facile et agréable. Il a été exécuté pour Louis XIV, qui le fit placer dans son cabinet particulier.
