THE VISITATION.

This composition is among the few ones that can give us an idea of Mignard's talents as an historical painter, for he had himself more known and remarked in a very advantageous manner, by his numerous portraits, which always display a graceful and fine expression, together with a great charm in colouring.

Mignard had begun this picture in Rome; but overcharged with works, and obliged to terminate, before his departure, the portraits he had under taken, he brought his canvass along with him. During a stay of a year at his brother's, at Avignon, he resumed it, but was not yet able to bring it to an end. He terminated it as length in Paris, and it was placed on the great altar of the Filles de la Visitation at Orleans. The head of the Virgin is said to be the portrait of his daughter, the countess de Feuquières, and saint Elisabeth that of his wife.

This picture has been engraved by Jean Louis Roullet.
