Après la bataille d'Issus, Alexandre n'eut plus qu'à poursuivre ce prince dans les défilés de la Cilicie, et à ramasser ses trésors et les bagages de son armée dispersée. Le destin voulut encore que la mère, la femme et les enfans de ce monarque infortuné et fugitif tombassent également entre les mains du vainqueur. Suivant le récit de Quinte-Curce, « Alexandre fit prévenir les prisonnières qu'il venait en personne les visiter; et, laissant derrière lui son escorte, il entra dans leur tente, accompagné d'Éphestion. Son âge était le même que celui d'Alexandre, mais sa taille beaucoup plus haute; aussi, le prenant pour le roi, les deux princesses l'honorèrent à la façon des Perses. Sysigambis, ayant connu son erreur, se jeta aux pieds d'Alexandre en le priant d'excuser sa méprise sur ce qu'elle ne l'avait jamais vu. Alors le roi lui tendit la main pour la relever en lui disant : « Mère, vous ne vous êtes pas trompée; celui-ci est un autre Alexandre. » Telle est la scène représentée par Le Brun, qui exécuta ce tableau à Fontainebleau, en présence de Louis XIV, ce prince venant presque tous les jours voir travailler son peintre favori. Parmi les chefs-d'œuvre de l'école française, la Famille de Darius sera toujours citée comme l'un des plus parfaits, pour la noblesse de la composition, ainsi que par la justesse et la vérité des expressions. After the battle of Issus, there only remained to Alexander to pursue Darius into the passes of Cilicia, and to gather his treasures and the baggage of the dispersed army. Fate so willed it, that the mother, the wife, and the children of the unfortunate and fugitive monarch, should also fall into the conqueror's hands. According to Quintus Curtius, « Alexander caused the female prisoners to be informed that he was coming in person to visit them; and, leaving his escort behind him, he entered their tent, accompanied by Ephæstion, who was of his own age, but much taller: thus, the two princesses, mistaking the latter for the king, greeted him according to the manner of the Persians. Sysigambis, discovering her mistake, threw herself at Alexander's feet, begging of him to excuse her error, as she had never before seen him. Then the king stretched out his hand to raise her, saying: « Mother, you are not mistaken; he also, is another Alexander. » Such is the scene represented by Le Brun, who executed this picture in the presence of Lewis XIV, who used to come almost every day to see his favorite painter at work. Among the masterpieces of the French School, the Family of Darius will always be mentioned as one of the most perfect, for the grandeur of the composition, as also for the correctness and fidelity of the expressions.
