HERCULES

COMBATING THE CENTAURS,

The Centaur Euryte having sought to carry off Hippodamia, the very day of her nuptials with Pirithous, this event became the signal of a dreadful fight, between the Centaurs and the Lapitha. Hercules and Theseus took an active part in the struggle, in which the famous Euryte, and a great number of Centaurs perished.

Ovid relates that in the place where they fought, stood an antique vase, of an enormous size: Theseus snatching it up, threw it at Euryte's head, dashed out his brains, and threw him on the ground. The Centaur, rolling over the sand, belches forth, with his blood, the wine he has just drunk. The others become furious and seize whatever they can get hold of as weapons. On every side, vases, dishes, urns, in a word, every thing made use of at a banquet is seen flying around.

This large composition is painted in the middle of the ceiling of the Lambert Hotel gallery, facing the Hercules delivering Hesione, previously given under no. 635. It has been engraved by L. Desplaces, and is in the Collection of the Lambert Hotel paintings.
