Jupiter (according to Dion) was the father of Venus, but the opinion of Hesiod is more generally believed, who asserts, that she was formed from the froth of the sea; issuing from the humid element resplendant in beauty. Immediately after her birth, the Hours pressed round her, she used a shell for a car, and she was conducted in triumph to the island of Cyprus by Tritons and Cupids.

Such a subject as this, exactly suited the painter Boucher, who in his lifetime was called the Painter of the Graces; his works were then highly extolled, and his talent appeared above all praise. Fifty years afterwards, the public opinion was greatly altered, and the performances of Boucher, seemed to possess no merit whatever, in the eyes of the ar tists. However, before a century had expired, another change took place, and without adopting the judgment of his cotemporaries, they perceived that the calumniators of Boucher had gone too far, that justly blaming the incorrectness of his outline, the affectation of his heads, and the wanness of his colouring, they ought at least to have allow ed that his compositions were delightful, and that the position of his figures were full of grace.

NAISSANCE DE VÉNUS.

Suivant Dioné Jupiter était le père de Vénus; mais on adopte plus généralement l'opinion d'Hésiode, qui rapporte que sa formation fut le résultat de l'écume de la mer. Elle sortit donc de l'élément humide, resplendissante de beauté. Aussitôt après sa naissance les Heures s'empressèrent autour d'elle, une coquille lui servit de char, et elle fut conduite en triomphe dans l'île de Chypre, par des Tritons et des Amours.

Un tel sujet convenait bien au peintre Boucher, qui de son vivant fut appelé le peintre des Grâces: ses ouvrages furent alors portés aux nues, son talent paraissait au-dessus de tout éloge. Un demi-siècle après, l'opinion était bien changée, et les ouvrages de Boucher semblaient aux yeux des artistes n'avoir aucun espèce de mérite; mais, avant que le siècle se fùt entièrement écoulé, on changea encore de maniere de voir, et, sans adopter les jugemens des contemporains de Boucher, on sentit que ses détracteurs avaient été trop loin, et qu'en blàmant avec raison l'incorrection de son dessin, la minauderie de ses têtes, et son coloris blafard, on devait au moins convenir que ses compositions étaient toujours remplies de charme, et la pose de ses figures pleine de grâce.
