Peut-on considérer ceci comme un tableau? C'est plutôt une figure d'étude, à laquelle l'auteur a joint quelques accessoires afin de la rendre plus agréable, et qu'il a décorée d'un nom oriental, qui semble motiver la nudité complète de la figure. Ce n'est pas la seule singularité à remarquer dans cette figure, et on peut s'étonner avec raison que l'auteur, qui s'est fait remarquer par la pureté et la correction de son dessin, au lieu de suivre les graces qu'a pu lui présenter la nature, se soit laissé entraîner à imiter la sécheresse et la raideur que l'on trouve ordinairement dans les tableaux des maîtres du xv° siècle. La couleur du tableau ne présente pas non plus cette vigueur que l'on est habitué à trouver dans les autres ouvrages de cet habile artiste, mais les accessoires y ajoutent bien du charme. On a vu cette figure au Salon de 1819. Elle a été lithographiée en 1826 par M. Larg., 5 pieds; haut., 2 pieds 10 pouces. ODALISK. We must not look upon this picture as an historical piece : it is rather a highly finished and studied figure which the artist has made still more pleasant by adding some accessories, and to which he has given an oriental name to explain the nakedness of his composition. Among the various critical dissertations this original figure has given birth to, the artist, who is known for the correctness and purity of his drawing, has been reproved for having imitated the precision and the severe style we may remark in the pictures of the old masters of the xyth century, instead of faithfully copying the nature he had under his eyes. The colouring of this picture has not that vigour we should expect from that eminent painter, and which we generally admire in all his other works; but the accessories are executed in a most enchanting and noble style. This figure was exhibited in the Salon of 1819. It has been drawn on stone in 1825 by M. Ingres himself in a most exquisite manner, and in 1826 on a larger scale by M.
