MOÏSE.

L'histoire de Moïse est trop connue pour qu'il soit nécessaire de la rappeler; nous n'avons d'ailleurs à le considérer ici que comme législateur des Hébreux. Il ne sera pas sans intérêt de voir ce qu'en dit J. J. Rousseau dans son Contrat social: « La loi judaïque, toujours subsistante, annonce encore aujourd'hui le grand homme qui l'a dictée; et tandis que l'orgueilleuse philosophie, ou l'aveugle esprit de parti, ne voit en lui qu'un heureux imposteur, le vrai politique admire dans ses institutions ce grand et puissant génie qui préside aux établissemens durables. » Parmi les ouvrages où il a été parlé de Moïse comme législateur, on doit distinguer ceux de Michaelis et de M. le marquis Pastoret, pair de France.

M. Marigny, auteur de cette figure, a représenté Moïse descendant du mont Sinaï, et apportant au peuple d'Israël les tables de la loi que Dieu vient de lui dicter. Sa tête est d'une belle expression, et la figure est largement drapée. Au bas, à gauche, on lit: M. MARIGNY, 1827.

La figure de Moïse est placée dans l'une des salles du Conseil d'état, vis-à-vis de celle de Numa, donnée précédemment sous le n° 251. Elle n'a pas encore été gravée.

MOSES.

The history of Moses is too well known to repeat it here, besides in this place we have only to view him in the light of legislator of the Hebrews. It will be perhaps interesting to recur to what Rousseau has said of him in his Contrat social: « The jewish law subsisting to this very day, testifies to the greatness of the man who dictated it, and whilst proud philosophy, or the blind spirit of party, regard him as a successful impostor, the true politician admires in his institutions the grand and powerful genius which presided over the formation of those durable establishments. » Amongst the works which treat of Moses as a legislator the most remarkable are those of Michaelis, and of the marquis Pastoret, a peer of France.

M. Marigny, the author of this picture, has represented Moses descending from mont Sinai, and bringing to the people of Israel the tables of the law, which God had just dictated to him. The expression of the head is beautiful; the drapery is large. At the bottom on the left side we read: M. MARIGNY, 1827.

This picture is placed in one of the halls of the Council of state, opposite that of Numa, already mentioned, no 251. It has not been yet engraved.
