SAINT LOUIS RENDANT LA JUSTICE. Rien de plus simple et de plus juste que d'avoir représenté dans la grande salle du Conseil d'état au Louvre, saint Louis rendant lui-même la justice à ses sujets, puisque c'est la plus noble des fonctions de la royauté. Les séances de ce conseil ont maintenant plus d'apparat que sous le règne de saint Louis; et c'est toujours le seul tribunal présidé par le roi en personne. C'est là qu'en dernier ressort arrivent les plaintes des sujets, et le roi y donne sa décision. L'origine de cette coutume nous est retracée par le sire de Joinville dans son Histoire de saint Louis, où il dit : En esté il se alloit esbatre au bois de Vicennes, et nous faisoit seoir tous emprès lui; et tous ceulx qui avoient affaire à lui venoient à lui parler, sans ce que aucun huissier ne autre leur donnast empeschement; et demandoit haultement de sa bouche s'il y avoit nul qui eust partie. Et quant il y en avoit aucuns, il leur disoit : Amys, taisez-vous, et on vous délivrera l'un après l'autre. » Ce tableau fait honneur au talent de M. Rouget. Il n'a pas encore été gravé. Nothing can be more natural and more just, than representing in the grand Council of state at the Louvre, saint Louis himself, administering justice to his subjects, as it is the most noble function appertaining to royalty. There is now more pomp in the sittings of this council than under the reign of saint Louis; it being the only tribunal, where the king presides in person. This court, the refuge for all grievances, rendered judgment without appeal. The origin of this custom is related by de Joinville in his History of saint Louis, where he says in the quaint language of those times. « In summer he repaired to the wood of Vicennes, and there commanding us to sit around him, all those who had any affair on hands, spoke to him, freely, without being prevented by any usher. The king himself demanded in a loud voice, if any person complained, and when many there were, he said to them, my friends, hold your peace, you shall be heard one after the other.
