You are as nigh as you can to observe what is loaden on o' ships from Port Royall for any other port, & also what shall bee brought in any of o ships into Carolina, how many passengers, what goods, & for whose acc" of wch you are from time to time to give us notice, & also how the Comdrs of or Ships doe beehave themselves. If it should happen that so many of o' Deputyes should dye or depart out of Carolina, that there should not bee three there, then are you to observe the orders for the delivery of the Indian trade, provizions, & that shall bee from time to time given you by o' Governo, & so many of o' Deputys as are alive & in Carolina. INSTRUCTIONS FOR M' HENRY BRAINE.

M' Henry Braine, You are under the Comand of M' Joseph West, (whom wee have apointed Comdr in Chief of o' fleet till their arrivall at Barbados) to saile to Kinsale in Ireland, & from thence to Barbados as hee shall direct and order you, & when you are at Barbados, you are to observe the orders of o' Governour for your proceedings to Port Royall, And to returne from Port Royall to Barbados or to Virginia as you shall bee directed by S' John Yeamans, M' Thomas Colleton & Majo' Kingsland,1 & there take in passengers & other fraught for Port Royall: if you goe to Virginia you are to apply yo'selfe to Mr William Burgh, in Chocatuck Creek, in James River, in whose hands you shall finde instructions what you are to doe; if you come to Barbados, you are to deliver what goods you shall bring from Port Royall for the Proprietors acc° to M' John Hallet, & take his &

Mr Thomas Colletons advice for your proceedings from thence, either to Saltordudos & Virginia, or to Virginia directly, or back to Port Royall.

When you are at Port Royall, you are to Consult wth Mr West, & o' Governo' there, to what port you shall goe from thence, & are to saile to that port that any two of you there shall agree on, all being present at the consultation, if alive.

You are from time to time to send us an acc" of your proceedings, what fraught your ship hath made, & what you have delivered into the hands of o' Factors or any of o' Agents. Ent. Book, 20, page 33.]

Mr John Rivers, yo' are to take charge of o' Storehouse att Port Royall containeing o' Materialls of Warr, and are from time to time to deliver out such quantity of Guns, Powder Shott & other Stores, as ye Govern' and Councill shall direct yo" by their order in wrighting and not otherwise, except it be some powder & birding Shott for ye use of o' Plantacon. You are to keepe account of what Gunns, Powder & fowling Shott, yo" doe by order of ye Governo' & Councell deliver to any one, and take ye persons rec' for ye same for whom you deliver it, The wch Receipt to avoid multiplicity of accts; yo" are to deliver to M' West, who is to charge ye sa Party wth it in his Books & account with him for ye same. To our trusty and well beloved Florence O'Sullivan' of Saint Margarett Westminster Gent: Greeting:

Wee being well assured of your wisdom, prudence and integrity have thought fitt and doe by these presents, nominate constitute and appoint you Our Surveyor Generall of the Province aforesaid during our pleasure as by yourself or such as you shall depute appointe & commissionate to lay out bounds and survey with chayne and other Instruments, all alliotments and parcells of land generall or particular, publick or private whether relating to us particularly or to other persons by grant from us according to such warrants and directions as you shall from time to time receive from us our Governor and Councill of our province aforesaid or the major part of them as Also true Certificates to make of the scituations bounds quantities and lines of all lands soe laid out, mentioning the persons for whome and the order you received for soe doeing the coppy of which certificates you shall in faire writing register and record in your office in its true figure, with the name of the righte owners of such Ground is laid out by virtue of the respective warrant from our Governor and Councill within our province of Carolina aforesaid Soe that upon any difference or controversy in Tytles of land as to its first settlement and inhabiting And as to the finding out the first right owners it may be more easily discussed And these and all other act or acts, thing or things which doe may or shall belong or in any wayes appertayne to the office of our Surveyor Generall within within the said Province, you are faithfully to doe and performe according to such orders and instructions as you shall receive from us the Lords Proprietors or our Governor or Gov

Taken prisoner to France and when released joined this expedition and was appointed deputy and surveyor-general. ‘A very dissentious, troublesome man,' 'shamed of nothing,' his plausibility could not cover his incompetence and ill practices. He was dismissed as deputy, had to share his surveyorship with Culpeper and then lost it. He was chosen to parliament 1672. Was an officer of militia 1672-76, and May, 1674, had charge of a signal gun on the island which still bears his name. He was arrested in the Culpeper disturbances, but was Commissioner of Public Accounts 1682-3. The proprietors granted him 2,340 acres in Christ Church which he devised to his daughter Katherine, who sold to John Barksdale. In 1692 Daniel Carty left £5 ‘to Katherine Sullivan, dau' & orphan of fflorence O'Sullivan, dec'd.'

May it please your Lordship,

This (after begging your Honors pardon) is to give your Lordshipp a perfect Accompte that wee are with our shipps now ridinge att an Anker in the Downes And may itt please your Honor I hope to your Lordshipps sattisfaction I have taken all the care I cann although very troublesome to fitt out and make ready with what expedition I possible could all the shipps now onely by the permission of the Almighty expecting a good winde and being well fitted with and by the leave of God I doe intende to waye and sett to sayle expecting under God a good and prosperous voyadge for Ireland into the port of Kingsale and upon our arivall from thence your Honor shall receive a more fuller Accompt then I att present can give your Lordshipp I have here enclosed sent your Honor a particular Accompt of what passendgers are aboard first Masters and then servants and then those persons that are single and have noe servants which with your Lordshipps pardoun is all att present from
