Epistle to the Philippians (A.D. 62). The progress of Christianity is now indicated by the opposition of the world's powers, and by the heretical sects who were beginning to manifest themselves. The Faith had by this time asserted its influence; and its universal claims and aggressive spirit were already sapping the foundations of heathenism, and preparing the way for world-wide conquests.

Notwithstanding its conquest by the Romans, Jerusalem continued to exist as a city though its power had fled and its glory had departed. It was still regarded by the dispersed exiles as a point of union for the whole people. From those days to the Zionist movement of the present day the Jews have cherished the never-dying hope of being one day restored to the city of their fathers. Their extinction as a political unit is a striking fulfilment of Old Testament prophecy.
