MARCHÉ AUX HERBES D'AMSTERDAM.

Les tableaux de Metzu n'offrent ordinairement qu'une ou deux figures ; en en mettant ici un plus grand nombre, le peintre n'a montré aucun embarras pour la manière de les grouper , et l'ou peut admirer le mouvement qui règne daus ce marché ; la vérité d'expression des personnages et le fini précieux avec lequel tout est trailé dans cette précieuse peinture.

Peut-être acquerrera-t-il encore du prix, aux yeux de certaines personnes , lorsqu'elles sauront qu'il décorait l'appartement, de la célèbre madame Geoffrin , et qu'à sa vente il fut payé vingt-huit mille francs.

Le graveur David a fait une grande estampe d' bleau. Il a été gravé ainsi par Niquel, pour le musée Filhol.

Metzu commonly introduces only one or two figures in his pictures ; but he seems nowise embarrassed in disposing the numerous group that animates this scene, and the life and motion of the market, the varied expression of the persons,

and the exquisite finish of the whole work, are truly admirable.

These merits will perhaps acquire additional lustre, in the eyes of some persons, from a knowledge of the fact, that this picture adorned the apartment of the celebrated Mme. Geoffrin, and, at the sale of her effects, was disposed of sor 11 20 pounds ( 28,000 francs).

The engraver David has executed a large plate of it: it has also been engraved by Niquet, for Filbol's Museum.
