Cette célèbre peinture antique représente un mariage des anciens, avec quelques - uns des usages dont ils étaient ordinairement accompagnés. L'époux presque nu, ayant sur la tête une couronne de feuillage, est assis près du lit sur une estrade. L'épouse, revêtue du flammeum, voile très-ample qui l'enveloppait entièrement, est assise sur le bord du lit; elle reçoit les consolations et les avis d'une des pronuba, femmes qui accompagnaient l'épousée et la dirigeaient pendant la cérémonie. Près de là, une autre femme brûle quelques parfums, peut-être bien pour chasser les sortilèges, contre lesquels les anciens étaient toujours en garde. Tout-à-fait à droite, on voit une prê tresse mettant la main dans un bassin rempli d'eau lustrale, destinée à l'aspersion de la chambre, et deux femmes paraissent être attentives à cette action. Au côté opposé, trois autres femmes paraissent occupées d'un sacrifice, pendant lequel l'une d'elles pince de la lyre. Cette précieuse peinture antique a été trouvée à la fin du XVIe siècle, dans l'endroit où étaient autrefois les jardins de Mécène. Le pape Clément VIII la fit alors transporter au palais Aldolbrandini, d'où lui est venu le nom de Noce Aldolbrandine. Larg., 6 pieds 6 pouces ? haut., 1 pied 8 pouces ? This celebrated antique painting represents an ancient marriage, with some of the rites practised on such occasions. The husband, almost naked and crowned with a garland of leaves, is sitting on an estrade near the bed; the wife, covered with the flammeum, an ample veil that nearly hides her person, is seated on the bed-side, receiving the advice and consolation of the pronuba, or women who accompanied and directed the bride during the ceremony. Near them is a woman burning incense; perhaps to dissipate malignant charms, against which the ancients were continually on their guard. On the right of the picture, is a priestess dipping her hand in a basin of lustral water, destined for the aspersion of the chamber; with two women, who seem intent upon her action on the opposite side, are three women, who appear to be busied in a sacrifice, during which one of them plays upon the lyre. : This invaluable ancient painting was found, at the close of the XVI. century, in the spot formerly occupied by the gardens of Mecænas, and, by order of Clement VIII., transported to the Aldobrandini palace: whence its name, of the Aldobrandini Marriage.
