DESCENTE DE CROIX.

Daniel Ricciarelli, plus connu sous le nom de Daniel de Voltère, est l'auteur de cette Descente de Croix, considérée comme l'un des sept plus beaux tableaux d'autel qui soit à Rome. Cependant la composition offre quelque confusion, et le coloris est un peu noir. Mais toutes les têtes sont remplies d'expression, variées, et des plus nobles.

La tête de la Vierge est un véritable chef-d'œuvre; quoique elle ait les yeux fermés, on voit cependant qu'en cédant momentanément à une peine extrême, elle est encore soutenue par une grande force d'âme.

Les disciples, occupés à détacher de la croix le corps de Jésus-Christ, ne présentent pas un parfait ensemble d'action; l'attitude de quelques-uns est un peu forcée, mais les parties nues font voir que le peintre était dessinateur correct.

Il est assez curieux de comparer cette composition avec le même sujet traité par Rubens, et que nous avons donné sous le n°. 45.

Ce beau tableau de Daniel Ricciarelli est à Rome dans l'église de la Trinité-du-Mont. Il a été gravé en 1710, par Nicolas Dorigny.

DESCENT FROM THE CROSS.

Daniel Ricciarelli, more commonly known by the name of Volterra, is the author of this Descent from the Cross, which is considered as one of the seven finest altar-pieces in Rome. There is some confusion in the composition, and the colouring is rather dingy; but the heads are varied, and in a high degree noble and expressive.

That of the Virgin is truly a master-piece though the closed eyes shew that she is, for a moment, overcome by. grief, the whole air is indicative of strength of soul.

Some want of unity is observable in the action of the Apostles, who are detaching the body from the cross; and the attitude of several of them is forced; but the naked parts shew the artist to have been master of drawing.

This picture offers an interesting subject of comparison with that of Rubens, on the same subject, no. 45.

This beautiful picture of Ricciarelli, is in the church of the Trinita del Monte, at Rome. It was engraved in 1710, by Nicolas Dorigny.
