Par cette dénomination des cinq sens, on entend parler des organes dont l'homme fait usage lorsqu'il exerce la vue, l'ouïe, le goût, l'odorat ou le tact. C'est donc pour rendre ces différentes sensations que le peintre Stella a réuni plusieurs personnes, dont chacune occupe plus particulièrement l'un des sens. A droite, une femme, vue par le dos, paraît vouloir cueillir une rose qu'elle flaire avec attention. Près d'elle, un homme achève de vider un verre qui contenait une liqueur, dont il goûte le reste avec plaisir. De l'autre côté, une femme, jonant du luth, lui fait rendre des sons pleins d'harmonie et qui flattent agréablement l'ouïe de chacun; elle est assise sur les genoux d'un homme qui la tient embrassée et désigne ainsi le tact ou toucher. Quant à la vue, elle est désignée par un vieillard dont on ne voit que la tête et qui paraît fort intéressé à toute celle scène. Ce tableau, d'une bonne couleur, a appartenu à M. Haquin ; vendu depuis peu à M. Papin, il a été lithographié par M. Feraut. Larg., 1 pied 8 pouces; baut., 1 pied 2 pouces. DOE THE FIVES SENSES. By this denomination of the five senses, is understood the organs of which man makes use when he puts into action, either his sight, hearing, taste, smelling, or feeling, it was therefore to express these various sensations that the artist Stella put together five persons, each of whom exercises more particularly one of his senses. On the right, a woman, whose back is turned to the spectator appears wishing to gather a rose she is smelling attentively. Near her, a man finishes emptying a glass that contained some liquor, the remains of which he is tasting with pleasure. On the other side, a woman playing on a lute, imparts to him most harmonious sounds that agreeably flatter the hearing of both : she is seated on the knees of a man who closely presses her and thus indicates feeling. As to sight, it is represented by an old man whose head only is seen and who appears very attentive at the scene. This picture, which is well coloured, belonged to M. Haquin; it has lately been sold to M. Papin, and has been done in Lithography by M. Feraut. Width 1 foot 9 inches; height 1 foot 3 inches. I |
