Felix escapes Hitler's annexation of Austria , comes to America and becomes a chemist. Years of inhaling noxious fumes in the laboratory damage his lungs. The doctor to whom he is referred emigrated to America from Germany after World War II, graduates from med school and joins an elderly physician's practice. Felix becomes one of his patients.

Doctor and patient gradually form a somewhat reluctant, at times adversarial relationship, during the course of which Felix learns that the man who is now trying to cure him from a potentially fatal illness once belonged to the Nazi party whose clutches Felix escaped and whose leader (Hitler) had eliminated his elderly parents.
