Here we have an intire Account of the Faith of the Catholick Church in the East, after the middle of the Third Century, near Sixty Years before the Council of Nice; and fuch an one as not only agrees most remarkably with that in the Conftitutions, but fuch an one as the Church had receiv'd, as deliver'd down ina traditionary way, by the Succeffion of Bifhops, from Eye-witneffes and the Apostles themselves, and till that Age preferv'd in the Holy and Catholick Church of Chrift; that is, in plain terms, such as was contain'd in their ἐκκλησιαςικός κανών οι Ecclefiaftical Conftitutions of the Apostles: As is evident by all the Characters thereof, and by the feveral Quotations or Allufions thereto all the way. Indeed, the rest of the fame Epiftle is well worth the Readers Perufal, and is a most valuable Fragment of genuine Christian Antiquity; as concerning the original Faith of the Church in the most facred Matters, and that at a time when fome Hereticks, even Popes themselves, began remarkably to corrupt it; and in a Place the longest free from those Corruptions of any other whatsoever. We may here alfo observe that these Bifhops who met at Antioch,

the

the See of Ignatius, feem alfo to have been well verft in his larger and genuine Epistles, and to refer to the same several times in this very Letter.

N. B. Hither perhaps might be referr'd the fpurious but Antient Epiftle of Ignatius to the Philippians; which has many and undenyable Quotations from and Atteftations to these Constitutions, as facred Books of our Religion. But because this Author is a Counterfeit, and unknown; and his time only fuppos'd by Conjecture; I fhall choose rather to refer the Learned Reader to the Epiftle it felf for fatisfaction, than to Tranfcribe his Teftimonies; especially fince the larger or genuine Epiftles of Ignatius, which are most plainly imitated by this Author, have already afforded us fo many more certain and unqueftionable Citations and Atteftations of the fame Nature.

XXV. The next Teftimony that I fhall alledge for these Conftitutions fhall be Peter A. D. 306 Bishop of Alexandria, in the beginning of the fourth Century, and a Martyr, who, had the Cuftody of thefe facred Records, and directly cites them in his Penitential Canons ftill extant; as Dr. Grabe alfo ob- spicileg. ferves. Christians did not kneel at their Prayers, as they did on other Days, according to the direction in the Conftitutions; but also reinforces the obfervation of the Wednesday and Fridays Fafts, and refers to the Conftitutions for the fame. Hear the Words of Peter, and then the parallel ones of the Conftitutions. I dare appeal to the impartial Reader whether thefe also be not, ftrictly fpeaking, dire& Citations out of the Apoftolical Conftitutions before us; and thofe as many as could be expected in the fmall Remains we have of this Author.
