as the Apocalypfe does, and contains commonly fresh Inftructions and Admonitions from him for the Advantage of his Church, yet are there feveral Paffages that Confirm the Clementine Conftitutions, as then the Rule of Chriftians; and this particularly at Rome, the Seat of Clement, nay in the very Days of Clement, and very probably as conveyed to the Churches by the means of Clement also. Take feveral of the Paffages in Order.

Here we may obferve (1) That that degree of Primitive Matrimonial Chastity, after the time of Child-bearing was over, I mean of living together like Brother and Sifter, which is here recommended to Hermas, as a Counfel of Chriftian Perfection, is very agreeable to the like Counfel of Perfection in the Conftitutions of the Apostles of Hufbands not frequenting the Company of their Wives when they are with Child. Which Counfels of Perfection, by the way, as at first recommended by the Apostles feem to me the occafion of that Cafe of 1 Cor. 7, 1, Confcience refolv'd by Paul to the Corinthians, relating to fuch abtinence; where

he determins that 'tis no farther a Duty than as both Parties have the gift of Continency, and are able to obferve it for a time, by mutual confent, for the purposes of Self-denyal Fafting and Prayer, and not otherwife. In which Cafes both thefe Rules become if not strict Duties, yet certainly very acceptable inftances of Piety and Mortification in all Ages of the Gofpel. (2) That Clement was Bishop of Rome when Hermas faw his Third Vision; and that he was look'd on as the proper Perfon to Communicate facred Precepts and Visions to other Churches; as if it was then well known how he had been employ'd about the Apoftolical Constitutions before, or was employ'd about them at the time of his Writing. This is a Paffage highly remarkable, and of moft undoubted Authority, as cited from Hermas by Origen himfelf. (3) That there were certainly the very fame Ranks and Orders in the Church of Rome in the Days of Hermas, that are setled by the Apoftolical Conftitutions; Five or Six of them being exprefly Nam'd by him here. Bishops, Doctors or Prefbyters, and Minifters or Deacons, Widows and Orphans; with the Deaconeffes also; for fuch the employing Grapte, a Woman, for the Admonition of the Widows and Orphans fairly imply's her to have been. (4) That an Adulteress is to be put away, unless fhe Repent; but yet is to be receiv'd again upon her Repentance;
