THE SACRIFICATOR.

This statue is unsurpassed for the beauty of its draperies, and their execution is so perfect that it might be almost said the marble creates illusion, by the suppleness and lightness with which the folds are cast.

The garment of the statue is the roman toge, a semi-circular cloak so ample that it enveloped the body three times: one of these extremities falls by the left foot, passes at first over the shoulder of the same side, then goes round the trunk below the right arm, next returns a second time over the left shoulder, in fine, the other extremity, falls behind descending to the heel. In this arrangement of the toge the fold might be varied in a thousand ways, according to the taste or caprice of the wearer; but, amongst them all, it would be difficult to find one offering more elegance and dignity than that displayed in the drapery before us. Here the toge, instead of stopping at the left shoulder on its first tour, ascends over the head, which it envelopes, and is capable of covering completely, according to the manner constantly observed from the remotest periods of antiquity.

This statue, of Parian marble, was in the Giustiniani palace at Venice; bought (by an Englishman, he had it conveyed to Rome to be restored, and there sold it to pope Clement XIV, who placed it in the Vatican. The two hands are modern, but the head is antique; it has however been detached, and does not seem to belong to the statue.
