LA PYTHONISSE.

Saŭl abandonné de Dieu crut encore possible de recevoir les conseils de Samuel, qui était mort; il eut recours à une enchanteresse pour revoir ce prophète, qui apparut en effet à ses yeux et lui dit : « Pourquoi avez-vous troublé mon repos, en me faisant évoquer? >> Saül lui répondit : « Je suis dans une étrange extrémité, car les Philistins me font la guerre, et Dieu s'est retiré de moi; il ne m'a pas voulu répondre, ni par les prophètes ni en songe; c'est pourquoi je vous ai fait évoquer afin que vous m'appreniez ce que je dois faire. » L'ombre de Samuel fit au roi plusieurs reproches sur sa conduite passée, et termina en lui disant : « Demain vous serez avec moi, vous et vos fils, et le Seigneur abandonnera aux Philistins le camp même d'Israël. Saül tomba aussitôt et demeura à terre, car les paroles de Samuel l'avaient épouvanté.

Salvator Rosa, d'une imagination si fougueuse, a très bien rendu ce sujet. L'enchanteresse, entourée d'objets bizarres, n'est occupée qu'à la réussite de ses conjurations; Samuel, enveloppé dans un grand voile blanc, a l'apparence et l'immobilité d'une ombre avec la majesté d'un prophète. Saül éprouve toutes les angoisses d'une ame faible, effrayée et soumise. Les officiers que l'on voit à gauche sont aussi dans l'étonnement, mais seulement des opérations de la pythonisse, car si l'ombre de Samuel était visible pour eux, ils seraient abattus comme

leur maître.

Ce tableau, d'un très-grand effet, a décoré long-temps les grands appartemens du roi, à Versailles. Il est aujourd'hui dans la galerie du Musée. Il a été gravé par A. Laurent.

THE WITCH OF ENDOR.

Saul, forsaken by God, thought it still possible to have the advice of Samuel, who was dead; he had recourse to a sorceress to raise up the prophet's spirit, which in fact appeared before him and said: « Why hast thou disquieted me to bring me up? » And Saul answered : « I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets nor by dreams; therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do. » The shade of Samuel severely reproached the king for his past conduct, and finished. by saying to him: To morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me; the Lord also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hands of the Philistines. » Then Saul fell straightway all along on the earth, and was sore afraid because of the words of Samuel.

The wild imagination of Salvator Rosa has done ample justice to this subject. The witch, surrounded by uncouth objects, is entirely engrossed by her spells; Samuel, shrouded in a large white cloak, has the appearence and the immobility of a spirit, with the majesty of a prophet. Saul experiences all the agonies of a mind feeble, frightened, and dejected. The officers, seen on the left, are also struck with wonder, but merely from the proceedings of the witch, for if the shade of Samuel was visible to them, they would appear equally overcome with their master.

This is a picture of very great effect; it long decorated the king's spacious apartments at Versailles, and is now in the gallery of the Museum. Engraved by A. Laurent.
