La reine, croyant acquérir une plus grande considération, avait obtenu du roi d'être sacrée et couronnée. Cette cérémonie eut lieu dans l'église de Saint-Denis, le 13 mai 1610, veille du jour malheureux où la France vit périr sous la main d'un assassin, le monarque qu'elle idolâtrait avec tant de raison. Cette cérémonie fut des plus brillantes, tant par le nombre des princes et princesses qui y concoururent, que par la richesse de leurs costumes et l'abondance des pierreries qui s'y trouvaient ajustées. A droite est assis le cardinal de Joyeuse, plaçant la couronne sur la tête de la reine, vêtue d'un manteau de velours cramoisi entièrement parsemé de fleurs de lis d'or et bordé d'hermine. A ses côtés sont le dauphin et Madame, fille du roi; à sa suite les douairières de Condé et de Montpensier, et la princesse de Conty. Derrière se trouvent placés le duc de Ventadour, tenant le sceptre, et le chevalier de Vendôme, portant la main de justice. Après eux se voient Marguerite de Valois, première femme de Henri IV, qui ne put à cause de son rang, se dispenser de faire partie du cortége. Dans le fond, à droite, est une tribune, où l'on aperçoit le roi; auprès sont les ambassadeurs et les ministres : celui du milieu ressemble un peu à Sully, mais cet ami fidèle du roi était malade, et n'assistait pas à cette cérémonie. The queen, believing that it would add to her consequence, obtained leave of the king to be consecrated and crowned. This ceremony took place in the cathedral of Saint-Denis, may 13, 1610; the eve of that unfortunate day, when France lost by the hand of an assassin, that monarch, whom she idolized with so much reason. This ceremony was of the most brilliant description, as well from the number of the princes and princesses, who were present, as for the richness of their dresses and the profusion of jewels which adorned them. On the right sits the cardinal de Joyeuse, placing the crown on the head of the queen, who wears a crimson velvet mantle sprinkled with golden lily flowers and edged with ermine. At each side of her are the dauphin and Madame, the king's daughter; in her train are the dowagers de Condé and de Montpensier, and the princess de Conty; behind is the duke de Ventadour, holding the sceptre, and the chevalier de Vendôme, holding the hand of justice. After them may be scen Marguerite de Valois, Henri the fourth's first wife, whose appearance could not be dispensed with in the retinue on account of her rank. In the background, to the right, is a gallery, where the king may be perceived; the ambassadors and ministers are near: the person in the midst of them a little ressembles Sully, but that faithful friend of the king was ill and could not assist at the ceremony.
