ST PAUL ET ST BARNABÉ

A LYSTRE.

Après avoir quitté Antioche, Paul et Barnabé parcoururent différentes villes, où ils prêchaient la foi. Arrivés à Lystre, ils y virent un homme estropié dès sa naissance : saint Paul ayant opéré sa guérison, un tel miracle étonna le peuple, qui disait : « Des dieux, sous la forme d'hommes, sont descendus vers nous. » Ils nommaient Barnabé, Jupiter, et Paul, Mercure, parce que c'était lui qui portait la parole. Le sacrificateur a mena des taureaux et apporta des couronnes devant leur porte, voulant leur offrir un sacrifice, aussi bien que le peuple. Mais les apôtres déchirèrent leurs vêtemens, et s'écrièrent; « Nous ne sommes que des hommes comme vous, et nous vous exhortons à quitter ces vaines superstitions, pour vous convertir. »

Tandis que l'on voit à droite saint Paul témoignant son désespoir de l'erreur dans laquelle est le peuple, on aperçoit à gauche .'estropié guéri, qui témoigne sa reconnaissance.

THE SACRIFICE AT LYSTRA.

Paul and Barnabas having left Antioch went through various towns, where they preached the Gospel. Being at Lystra, they saw there a man who was a cripple since his birth: St. Paul having cured him, the people were amazed at such a miracle, and said: The Gods are come down to us in the likeness of men. They called Barnabas, Jupiter, and Paul, Mercury, because he was the chief speaker: and the Priest, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, wishing to offer them a sacrifice with the people. But the Apostles, rent their clothes, and cried out:We are but men like yourselves, and we preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God.

St. Paul is seen on the right hand side, shewing his despair at the error into which the people have fallen, whilst the cripple, who has been cured, is seen, on the left hand, testifying his gratitude.
