Nothing certain is known respecting St. Bartholomew's birth or country, yet he is believed to have been born in Galilee, as also the other Apostles. Some persons have pretended that his true name was Nathanael, and that Bartholomew means Bar-Tholomai (the son of Ptolemy). Nor is the year of his death known, with more certainty; but it is the received opinion that he was flayed alive, by order of Astiages, king of Armenia.

Joseph Ribera, known under the name of Lo Spagnuoletto, has repeatedly painted the Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew; and he has always represented this cruel scene with a colour and truth that revolt.

This picture, which was formerly in the Modena gallery, now forms part of that of Dresden. It has been engraved by Marco Pitteri.

SAINT BARTHÉLEMY.

On ne peut rien dire de certain sur la naissance ni sur le pays de saint Barthélemy; cependant on le croit né en Galilée comme les autres apôtres. Quelques personnes ont prétendu que son véritable nom était Nathanaël, et que celui de Barthélemy signifiait Bar-Tholémay (fils de Ptolémée). On ne sait pas davantage l'année de sa mort; mais il est reçu qu'il fut écorché vif par les ordres d'Astiage, roi d'Arménie.

Joseph Ribera, connu sous le nom de l'Espagnolet, a peint plusieurs fois le martyre de saint Barthélemy, et toujours il a rendu cette scène cruelle avec une couleur et une vérité qui font horreur.

Ce tableau, autrefois dans la galerie de Modène, fait maintenant partie de celle de Dresde. Il a été gravé par Marc Pitteri.
