1335 years ago, on the tenth day of the new year, in the early hours of the afternoon, on a sand-dune at Karbala, south of the current Iraqi capital, a small convoy of men, women, and children was savagely massacred by an army of over 30,000. It took the monstrous military force little more than four hours to completely and utterly annihilate the encampment. The small group led by Imam Hussein, grandson of their prophet, though mythically defiant, suffered a crushing defeat. The remaining women and children were taken into custody. The caravan then accompanied the severed heads of the martyrs and was paraded throughout the nation in a humiliating spectacle amidst demented festivities and celebrations and then, everything was over.. Everything. Yet in the midst of the chaos and senseless brutality, Hussein became a singular figure who fills history with his grace and grandeur, becoming a meta-historical legend, epitomizing the perennial struggle between good and evil. This is his true, albeit unbelievable story.
